Sa Pa is a town in a beautiful, mountainous region of northern Vietnam on the border with China.
At 1,650 m above sea level in Vietnam's remote northwest mountains, Sa Pa is known for both its fine, rugged scenery and its cultural diversity. Sa Pa is a picturesque town in the Hoang Lien Son mountain range near the Chinese border in northwestern Vietnam known as "the Tonkinese Alps". Sa Pa and its surrounding region is host to many hill tribes, as well as rice terraces, lush vegetation, and Fansipan, the highest peak in Vietnam. As a result of a recent surge in popularity, Sa Pa has become a tourist hotspot where money is the new drug of choice. Don't be put off by the rush, your explorations of the surrounding countryside will be worth the trouble.

There really isn't a right or wrong time to visit the country, since you will get both rainfall and sunshine in varying amounts throughout the year. The general conception about Vietnam is that it is a country with steamy jungles and hot sun, and for the most part, they are not wrong! However, even though the country is tropical, you will find diversity in it. From chilly mountains and cool highland areas to sun-kissed coastlines, and of course, the steamy jungle, which is laced with Swampy rivers, you will find it all here! Due to the opposing monsoon season in the south and north, seasonal changes in central, north and south of Vietnam are usually different. That means no matter when you visit Vietnam, you will get high season at least any one of the three regions. However, the tropical south stays warm throughout the year. Vietnam can be categorized into three distinct climatic and geographical zones. North of Vietnam is much cooler than the other regions. Winter lasts from November to January, and the mountainous areas are usually quite cool during these months. If you are planning to travel to the far north to Dien Bien Phu or Sapa, along the China/Laos borders, make sure you bring warmth clothes. Fansipan is one of the popular destinations near Sapa, and it draws much tourist attention for being the highest point of Vietnam. In this region, temperature sometimes drops below freezing, and if you are lucky, you may get to experience snowfall! The coastal regions are warmer and humid throughout the year, with the exception of the rainy season, which lasts from May to October Mid-winter is the best time to visit.
