Koh Ker, a remote temple complex that once served as the ancient capital of the Khmer Empire in Cambodia and was abandoned for many years, has been recommended by Fodor's Travel as an adventure destination for 2025. Today, Koh Ker is located in Preah Vihear Province, about 120 km from Siem Reap.
Spanning an area of 30 square kilometers, the ancient capital of Koh Ker features 54 massive stone towers at its center and hundreds of temples dedicated to giant linga symbols, hidden amidst the surrounding forest. The Apsara Authority, responsible for protecting Cambodia's archaeological heritage, has yet to complete a full inventory of the site.
Koh Ker was forgotten for over a thousand years, remaining deserted. To this day, the ruins continue to lie abandoned, with no significant restoration efforts underway, except for minor repairs to accommodate visitors.
This complex is ideal for adventure travelers or motorbike enthusiasts due to its remote location and desolate condition.
