Hoi An or Da Nang? Here's the Answer Most Travel Guides Don't Give You.
A question popped up on Tripadvisor just a couple of days ago:
“Should I stay four nights in Hoi An and simply day-trip to Da Nang, or should I split my stay between the two?”
And honestly...
This is a much better question than:
“What are the top things to do in Da Nang?”
Because the answer depends on how you like to travel.

🏮 If you love atmosphere...
Stay in Hoi An.
Imagine finishing dinner and simply walking back through streets glowing with lanterns.
No need to find a taxi.
No need to drive.
No need to check the time.
You can wander.
Stop for dessert.
Find a little bar.
Take photos.
Sit beside the river.
Then walk back to your hotel.
That's one of Hoi An's greatest advantages.
The town itself becomes part of your holiday.

🏖️ But if you love space...
Da Nang has something different.
A long coastline.
Wide beaches.
Modern hotels.
More room.
A different restaurant scene.
And the feeling of a real Vietnamese coastal city rather than a historic town designed around tourism.
You can have a completely different kind of morning:

Have breakfast overlooking the ocean.

If you can stay in Hoi An and easily explore Da Nang as part of your itinerary, you may have a much more relaxed experience.
And if your priority is beach time and a resort-style holiday?
Then staying in Da Nang might make more sense.

🏞️Thinking About Vietnam in October? Here's the Question We'd Ask Before Booking Anything.

October is getting closer.
And we're seeing more travellers asking the same thing:
“Should we still include Central Vietnam?”
Especially Hoi An and Da Nang.
It's a fair question.
Search online and you'll find plenty of warnings about rain, storms and flooding around Central Vietnam in October.
Then you'll find someone saying:
“We went in October and had an amazing time.”

➡️So which one is true?
Both can be.
And that's exactly why we don't think a simple “yes” or “no” is good travel advice.
🇻🇳 Vietnam doesn't have one October.
That's the first thing we'd tell anyone planning their trip.
Hanoi isn't Hoi An.
Ninh Binh isn't Da Nang.
And Da Nang isn't Phu Quoc.

🏞️The country stretches a long way from north to south, and the weather can behave very differently depending on where you are.
We've seen this confusion come up repeatedly in recent traveller discussions.

🌇One family planning 16–23 October was specifically asking whether to skip Da Nang and Hoi An because of the possibility of rain and flooding, while other travellers planning October are deliberately building trips around the north instead.

And that tells us something important:
The right answer isn't “October is good” or “October is bad.”
The right answer is:
“What kind of holiday are you trying to have?”
If your dream is:
🏖️ Seven days of guaranteed beach weather
then we'd look very carefully at your destination choices.
But if your dream is:
🏮 wandering through Hoi An
🍜 eating incredible food
☕ discovering cafés
🎨 experiencing local culture
🚲 exploring the countryside
🌿 having a beautiful hotel to retreat to if the weather turns
then a little weather uncertainty doesn't necessarily mean you should cross Central Vietnam off your list.

A fixed package might say:
“Day 5 — Hoi An walking tour.”
Rain or shine.
A customised itinerary should ask:
“What else can we do if the weather changes?”
Maybe your morning is sunny.
Great.
Go outside.
Maybe the afternoon becomes wet.

Or a spa.
Or a slow lunch.
Or simply enjoying the hotel instead of feeling guilty that you're not “doing enough”.

🌿 Ninh Binh Is Not a Day Trip. And Here's Why We Say That.
There's a question we see again and again when people plan their first Vietnam trip:
“Can I just visit Ninh Binh as a day trip from Hanoi?”
Technically?
Yes.
But here's our honest answer as people who actually plan these journeys:
If you have the time, we'd stay overnight.
And here's why.

Imagine waking up somewhere surrounded by limestone mountains.
No traffic outside your hotel window.
No need to rush downstairs for a 7am departure.
You have breakfast.
Have a coffee.
And then...
You simply start your day.
This is the part of Vietnam that gets lost when Ninh Binh becomes a checklist.

A typical day trip might look like this:
🚐 Early morning departure from Hanoi.
🚣 Boat trip.
📸 Take some photos.
🥾 Climb Mua Cave.
🍜 Lunch.
🚐 Back to Hanoi.
By the time you arrive back at your hotel...
You're exhausted.
And you've spent a large part of the day travelling.
You saw Ninh Binh.
But did you experience Ninh Binh?
That's a different question.

🌾 Give it two nights instead.
Suddenly everything changes.

One of the most common questions we're seeing from travellers planning Vietnam right now is:
“Is September a good time to visit Vietnam?”
And honestly...
That's not quite the right question.

➡️The better question is:
“Which part of Vietnam are you visiting in September?”
Because Vietnam is a long country.
And the weather can be completely different from one region to another.
This is something first-time visitors often discover only after they've already booked their flights.
They look at one weather forecast for “Vietnam”...
And assume it applies to Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Hoi An, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City equally.
It doesn't.
🇻🇳 NORTH, CENTRAL OR SOUTH?
Let's imagine you've got 9–14 days.
You want:
☕ Great coffee
🍜 Amazing food
🌿 Nature
🏮 Culture
🏖️ A little beach time
🚢 Maybe a cruise
😌 And enough time to actually relax
The temptation is to say:
“Let's do everything.”
Hanoi.
Sapa.
Ninh Binh.
Ha Long Bay.
Da Nang.
Hoi An.
Hue.
Ho Chi Minh City.
Phu Quoc.
Sounds amazing...
Until you realise how much time you'll spend packing, checking out, getting to airports, waiting for flights, transferring between cities and checking into another hotel.
And suddenly your relaxing holiday starts feeling like a logistical exercise.

➡️So what would we do?
We'd look at your exact travel dates first.
If you're travelling in September, we'd look carefully at the weather patterns for each region before deciding how to structure your itinerary.

For a short trip, we'd rather give you one region done beautifully than three regions done in a hurry.

For example:
🌿 9 days?
Hanoi → Ninh Binh → Ha Long/Lan Ha Bay → Sapa
could make much more sense than trying to add Central Vietnam as well.

And if you're travelling for 14–16 days?
Now we have much more flexibility.
We can build a journey around the things you actually enjoy.
Maybe you're a foodie.
Maybe you love walking.
Maybe you're a couple who wants beautiful hotels and slow mornings.
Maybe you're travelling with your parents and don't want to spend half your holiday rushing between airports.
Maybe you simply want to sit somewhere beautiful with a cold drink and think:
“This is exactly why we came to Vietnam.”
That's what itinerary planning should be about.
One more thing...
Don't let the possibility of rain automatically scare you away from Vietnam.
Rain doesn't always mean a ruined holiday.
Sometimes it's a shower.
Sometimes it's an afternoon storm.
Sometimes the weather changes completely the next morning.
The key is not building an itinerary with zero flexibility.
Give yourself breathing room.
Have Plan B experiences.
