Quang Tri Mine Action Center (QTMAC) conducted a monthly coordination meeting combined with a visit to NPA/RENEWโ€™s "Scorpion" operational site in Tan Ky village, Gio Quang commune, Gio Linh district.

Representatives of management and supervision of mine action operators including MAG, PTVN, NPA/RENEW, Golden West and provincial military liaison observers of the operators attended the meeting.

At the site, the NPA/RENEW representative introduced the structure and operating principles of the "Scorpion" detection system, which is a detector with technological applications in the field of humanitarian demining in Quang Tri funded by the U.S DoD. The "Scorpion" detection system is in the process of piloting and researching with many advantages. All operators paid much attention to the device and discussed it. Also, they look forward to having the opportunity to learn and discuss further in the future.

In addition, the operators also quickly updated their results in March and upcoming plans as well as requested QTMAC's support in resolving some problems during operations.

On behalf of QTMAC, Mr. Dinh Ngoc Vu - Deputy Director would like to express his gratitude to NPA/RENEW for successfully supporting the site visit. He also hopes that the "Scorpion" detection system will be one of the tools and solutions that can help speed up the clearance in appropriate contaminated areas through coordination, management, and supervision of QTMAC.

Overcoming Darkness and Finding Love: An Inspiring Story of a Bomb Survivor

Thanh and G*i's remarkable journey began in the early 1980s at Tri Buu Church, where they met during catechism class. Tragedy struck young Thanh in 1984. An unexploded ordnance accident at Long Hung junction stole his sight at the tender age of 11 as he was helping his father in the rice field.

Twelve years passed, filled with uncertainty. Then, in 1996, fate intervened. G*i, planting rice near Thanh's house, was instantly recognized by him despite his blindness. Overcoming social barriers, Thanh embarked on a two-year journey, walking the dusty path along the Thach Han River from his Quang Tri home to visit G*i in An Don village. Their love deepened, culminating in marriage in 1998.

Their family flourished with the arrival of a daughter in 2000 and a son in 2008. Thanh became a pioneer at the Quang Tri Blind Center. With support from RENEW and the Irish government through Irish Embassy in Vietnam, 2015 marked a new beginning. They launched their "Thanh G*i" brand, crafting incense in the comfort of their home. This endeavor, fueled by resilience, now provides a steady income, exceeding four million VND and covering their daily needs.

In An Don parish, they stand as an inspiration. They attend church every morning and spend the rest of their weekdays making incense for sale. If you ever find yourself in An Don ward, look for their exquisite home-made incense, sold right next to the An Don Parish Church.

Today, the American veterans visited the family of Mr. Le Xuan Binh in Phuoc Thi Village of Gio My Commune, Gio Linh District. Binh's family is among many families with Agent Orange victims that RENEW has provided a breeding cow and household essentials thanks to the funding from Irish Aid. Born in 1972, Binh suffers disabliities due to his fatherโ€™s exposure to Agent Orange during wartime. Binh has two sons. His eldest son, a healthy person, is a sophomore at Hue College of Pedagogy. The other son is an 11th grader who suffers the same disabilities as his father. Le Xuan Thinh is the third generation affected by Agent Orange.

Currently, all the family affairs are put on the shoulders of the 51-year-old mother. Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong farms a 3,500-square-meter rice field, tends two cows, and works for other villagers to earn income. She was moved when a big group of American veterans walked under torrential rains to visit her family.

The group of American veterans visited the Quang Tri Town's Blind of Association. Thanks to the support from ๐•๐ž๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ง๐ฌ ๐…๐จ๐ซ ๐๐ž๐š๐œ๐ž during the past five years via RENEW, the Blind Association has created employment for 18 persons with disabilities due to unexploded bombs and Agent Orange to earn independent income.
