The answer is: cards for convenience, cash for flexibility.
In Vietnam, card and QR code payments have become the preferred way to pay in most cities, including Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and Hoi An. While it's still a good idea to carry some cash, you’ll likely find that paying by card or QR is easier for most of your trip.
Here are a few tips to make payments hassle-free:
💳 Use your credit or debit card whenever possible.Cards are widely accepted at hotels, shopping malls, restaurants, cafés, supermarkets, and most tourist attractions.
📱 QR code payments are becoming the local standard. Many businesses, from trendy cafés to local restaurants, accept VietQR. Travelers can use apps like LocalPay to scan VietQR codes without needing a Vietnamese bank account.
💵 Keep a small amount of cash on hand. Cash is still useful for street food vendors, traditional markets, small family-run shops, and some rural areas where digital payments may not be available.
🏧 ATMs are widely available across Vietnam, but withdrawing larger amounts less frequently can help reduce transaction fees.
