Traditional markets were more than centers of commerce. Since the women(including beautiful young girls) were both the buyers and sellers, young men often meandered through the markets to check out the prospects, as this ca dao notes:

Wise men seek wives in crowded markets
Wise women seek husbands in large military units

One famous tale recounts how poet-statesman Nguyen Trai was strolling through the market when he noticed a young woman selling rush mats. The vendor’s beauty so captivated Nguyen Trai that he is said to have addressed her with this quatrain in seven-word meter:

Where are you and your mats from?
Stacked,single-are any still for sale?
What age have you reached this spring?
Are you married yet? How many children?

Much to his amazement, the beautiful vendor responded with her own extemporaneous quatrain:

I’m here from Tay Ho selling mats
You needn’t ask whether I’ve sold out
My spring years have just reached sixteen
I’ve no husband, you ask about children

Nguyen Trai took the pretty vendor, Nguyen Thi Lo, as his wife. Although this may be apocryphal, the details of the couple’s death are historical. Nguyen Thi Lo’s beauty, charm, and literary talent also enchanted King Le Thai Tong, who often visited the couple. The King died suddenly the day after such a visit. Nguyen Thi Lo was accused of regicide. She and Nguyen Trai were executed in 1442. In 1462, King Le Thanh Tong rehabilitated the couple’s reputations. Nguyen Trai’s home at Con Son in Cong Hoa Commune, Chi Linh District, Hai Duong Province about seventy kilometers east of Ha Noi is a national heritage site.

Where are other ancient markets? What characteristics did the ancient markets share?

Apart from Ha Noi, other famous market cities during the 17th century were Pho Hien in Hung Yen Province(northern Vietnam), Hoi An in Quang Nam Province (central Vietnam), Thanh Ha in Thua Thien Hue, and Gia Dinh(southern Vietnam).

Markets, whether large or small, began to appear near transportation routes. D**g Xuan Market in Ha Noi, D**g Ba Market in Hue, and Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh City are all located near once busy river wharves. During ancient times, these markets spread over open areas without walls or huts. More recent markets built on those same sites now have a central building surrounded by shopping streets. Stalls and stands fill the central building, while greengrocers, fishmongers, and butchers sell their wares from bamboo baskets or makeshift stalls outside the market building.

The traditional market represented the industry and dynamism of Vietnamese women in Confucian society, which encouraged ambitious men to study for the mandarin examinations and discouraged their involvement in the trade. While the Confucian scholars studied, their wives not only shouldered the housework and reared the children but also traded in the market to support their families.

The image of hardworking women pervades Vietnamese literature. Tu Xuong(1870-1907), a famous Vietnamese poet, described the work ethic of Vietnamese women in these seven-metered lines from “My Beloved Wife”:

Trading all year on the riverbank,
She supports her husband and five children.
A stock fishes in the expansive plain,
Rippling the water at the busy wharf.

Nothing symbolizes the hardship, resilience, patience, and skill of Vietnamese women better than simple shoulder pole. Like an archer’s bow, the broader shoulder pole curved slightly and had a notch at each end. The shoulder pole was bendable like a bow but broader and flatter.

A Vietnamese writer once saw a shoulder pole hanging on a wall in the home of a Vietnamese woman living in a foreign country. The woman had hung it to remind her of the days she once carried goods to a village market in Viet Nam. The bamboo strips that once supported the heavy baskets swaying beneath the pole had worn its two ends smooth.

Who are the legendary founders of trade in Viet Nam?

Chử Đồng Tử and Tiên Dung are the hero and heroine of one of Viet Nam’s most beautiful love stories. A temple dedicated to them stands alongside the Red river d**e downstream from Hanoi and about 5km downriver from Bat Trang village.

Chử Đồng Tử and Tiên Dung are the hero and heroine of one of Viet Nam’s most beautiful love stories. A temple dedicated to them stands alongside the Red river d**e downstream from Hanoi and about 5km downriver from Bat Trang village.

Chu D**g Tu’s family was so poor that he and his father shared a single loincloth even though his father had told Chu D**g Tu to keep the garment for himself.

One day, Princess Tien Dung, a daughter of the 18th Hung king, went boating on the Red River, escorted by her maids and soldiers. Chu D**g Tu was fishing naked. Seeing her boat coming down the river, Chu D**g Tu ran up the bank and dug a shallow hole to hide under the sand until the regal boat passed. Tien Dung found the scenery so entrancing that she ordered the boat’s skipper to anchor alongside the river bank and told the servants to build a changing room from poles and cloth. The princess entered the makeshift shelter undressed and started to rinse herself with cool river water.

As fate would have it, the place Tien Dung had chosen to bathe was over Chu D**g Tu’s hiding place. Her bath water splashed on the ground and washed away the camouflaging sand. Startled by the naked young man at her feet, Tien Dung demanded an explanation.

Chu D**g Tu recounted his story.

“I’d vowed never to marry,” Tien Dung said,” but now that I’ve met you through this strange twist of fate, I can no longer counter Heaven’s will”.

Soon, Chu D**g Tu and Tien Dung became husband and wife.

The king was furious. He disowned his daughter as soon as he heard of her marriage to a pauper. Tien Dung remained in her husband’s village and traded the regal goods from her boat for the couple’s daily necessities. Every day, Chu D**g Tu fished while his wife went to market. In this way, the couple scratched together enough to live.

One day, a trader stopped at their house and described a wealthy southern port town overflowing with goods. The couple decided to set sail in that direction. From that point on, they traveled from one seaport to another, buying and selling.

The temple to Chu D**g Tu and Tien Dung in Binh Minh commune, Khoai Chau District, Hung Yen Province stands amid bamboo in a lovely riverside landscape that reflects the lover’s story and their trading voyages to distant lands.

"Ha Noi"

The “City within the River’s Bend,” was founded by Emperor Ly Thai To in AD 1010, near Co Loa, the ancient capital of the first Viet state dating to the 3rd century BC. Ly Thai To structured this city, then known as Thang Long, around the massive citadel.

The “City within the River’s Bend,” was founded by Emperor Ly Thai To in AD 1010, near Co Loa, the ancient capital of the first Viet state dating to the 3rd century BC. Ly Thai To structured this city, then known as Thang Long, around the massive citadel.

To the east of this, a settlement of guilds was established to serve the needs of the royal court. By the 16th century, this area had developed into Hanoi’s celebrated Old Quarter. The arrival of the French in the 19th century marked a period of reconstruction, as they tore down parts of the citadel and some ancient temples to make way for the new European quarter. However, this cultural vandalism was compensated for, to a large extent, bequeathed the city.

During the First Indochina War, the city’s central districts escaped largely unharmed, and subsequently, in 1954, Hanoi has proclaimed the capital of independent Vietnam. Sadly, this was not the end of its violent history as it was then plunged into the conflict emerged as an elegant, cultured, and affluent city, where museums and galleries coexist with chic shops and fashionable restaurants.

It’s better to understand when you accompany the local guide in Hanoi, not only about history, also is a great chance to immerse yourself in the food in the ancient city.
