Strolling around Hoàn Kiếm Lake is one of the best ways to soak in the atmosphere of Hanoi. The lake is especially lively in the early morning when locals do tai chi, jog, or practice fan dancing, and in the evening when it turns into a social hub.
Here are a few highlights along the way:
• Ngọc Sơn Temple: Located on a small island, this temple is reached via the iconic red Huc Bridge. It’s worth a visit for its architecture and lake views.
• Tháp Rùa (Turtle Tower): A small, picturesque tower in the middle of the lake, beautifully lit at night.
• Walking Street (weekends only): On Friday evenings through Sunday, the roads around the lake are closed to traffic, turning the area into a pedestrian-only zone with street performances, games, and a festive vibe.
• Café stops: Try a lakeside café for egg coffee or Vietnamese tea. Cafe Đinh and Highlands Coffee (on the second floor of a building overlooking the lake) offer great views.
• Book Street (Phố Sách Đinh Lễ): Just off the lake, this small street is lined with bookstores, a great stop for book lovers.
• Ly Thai To Park: A peaceful spot with a statue of the emperor who founded Hanoi.
If you’re strolling in the evening, consider continuing into the Old Quarter for a night market or a bowl of bún chả!
