Every boat on the water watches you back.
Along the coasts and rivers of Central and Southern Vietnam, boats have painted eyes. Not decoration. In local belief, the boat is a living thing. It has a soul, and it needs eyes to find its way, to look for fish, and to face what lies beneath the water.
Before the eyes are painted, there is a quiet ritual. Fruit, incense, and flowers at the bow. Water to cleanse the hull. A few soft prayers. Only then are the pupils added. From that moment, the boat is alive. The eyes become sacred, and no stranger may touch them.
The style changes by region. In the south, bold and direct. Along the central coast, smaller and more refined. Each place has its own expression.
A quiet tradition, still part of daily life on the water.
