🇻🇳 New Overnight Stay Rule in Vietnam: What You Need to Know

Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security has clarified how the new overnight stay notification rule works, and it’s something both residents and visitors should be aware of.

Since 1 July, households are required to notify local authorities when someone stays overnight at their home, including relatives and friends. If the homeowner is away, the overnight guest is responsible for submitting the notification.

📌 Key information:

🕚 Deadline
• Before 11:00 PM on the day of arrival.
• If arriving after 11:00 PM, notify before 8:00 AM the following morning.

📱 How to notify
• VNeID app (Thủ tục hành chính → Thông báo lưu trú)
• Ministry of Public Security Service Portal (https://dichvucong.bocongan.gov.vn)
• National Public Service Portal (https://dichvucong.gov.vn)
• Telephone or email
• Other approved residency notification channels

💰 Good to know
• The notification is free.
• No visit to a police office is required if you use one of the available digital channels.
• One notification can cover stays of up to 30 days.

🏡 Who does this apply to?
This mainly affects private homes, such as staying with your partner, family, or friends. Hotels, serviced apartments, and most registered accommodation providers already complete these procedures on behalf of their guests.

The Ministry says the purpose of the rule is to improve the accuracy of residence records, support public security, and streamline administrative services. It is not intended to restrict people’s movements.

Vietnam Airlines has officially launched the first-ever direct route between Hanoi and Amsterdam, with flights beginning on June 16, 2026.
