Angkor Wat, the largest monument of the Angkor group and the best preserved, is an architectural masterpiece. Its perfection in composition, balance, proportions, relief's and sculpture make it one of the finest monuments in the world.

Wat is the Khmer name for temple (the French spelling is "vat "), which was probably added to "Angkor "when it became a Theravada Buddhist monument, most likely in the sixteenth century. After 1432 when the capital moved to Phnom Penh, Angkor Wat was cared for by Buddhist monks.

It is generally accepted that Angkor Wat was a funerary temple for King Suryavarman II and oriented to the west to conform to the symbolism between the setting sun and death. The bas-reliefs, designed for viewing from left to right in the order of Hindu funereal ritual, support this function.

The outstanding value of the property is centered around the drowned limestone karst landforms, displaying spectacular pillars with a variety of coastal erosional features such as arches and caves which form a majestic natural scenery. The repeated regression and transgression of the sea on the limestone karst over geological time has produced a mature landscape of clusters of conical peaks and isolated towers which were modified by sea invasion, adding an extra elemant to the process of lateral undercutting of the limstone towers and islands.

That Luang, or the Great Stupa, in Vientiane is a national symbol (its image is on Laos’ official seal) and also the most sacred monument in the country. From the outside That Luang looks more like a fortress surrounded by high walls and it features two temples with the main stupa, the top of which is covered with gold leaf, standing 148 feet tall. The beautiful architecture is in Lao style, influenced by Buddhist beliefs – these include finely-gilded, red-lacquer doors, pointed lesser stupas, many Buddha images and beautiful flower and animal images.

El Nido has many beaches, located in Palawan province, taking more than 400 km from Manila captital. El Nido is not a modern and crowded place like Boracay, but quiet and just small as a village. Most visitors are dust tourists, sleeping in dorm, not in a resort. If you have an opportunity to come here, do not forget to buy island exploring tours, with many services such as diving, swimming in the sea.

10 facts about Angkor Wat (part 2)

Number 6: Henri Mouhot, a French explorer, helped to broaden the famous Angkor Wat to the West, announcing his visit to Angkor Wat in the mid-nineteenth century.

Number 7: Sandstone, a stone used to build Cambodian national monuments, weighed at least 5 tons, was transported from a quarry 25 miles away.

Number 8: The last XX was not controlled by the tourism industry, also where the robbery of antiquities occurred. Many ancient statues were beheaded, and those heads were sold to private individuals and became their collections. An effort with international cooperation has restored those places, as well as the deterioration of the structure due to instability. Thus, Angkor Wat was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1992.

Number 9: An Angkor temple called Ta Prohm, which is famous for a giant tree, collapses part of the temple, which was once used as a backdrop for the Tomb Raider blockbuster. In the seven days filming there, the film crew paid $ 10,000 a day. Unfortunately, too many branches of the tree beyond the control of Ta Prohm could overwhelm them, so many branches were cut to not affect the temple.

Number 10: According to travellers’ experience, a 3-day trip to Angkor Wat will cost you $ 40. The one-day trip costs you $ 20 or a week, and you’ll cost just $ 60.

10 facts about Angkor Wat (part 1)

Number 1: Angkor Wat is the main reason for over 50% of international tourists visiting Cambodia. The people of Cambodia are very proud of their architecture and it was placed on the flag of Cambodia in 1850 (Afghanistan and Cambodia are the only two countries in the world to carry the nation’s immortal flagship on the flags). Images of Angkor Wat also appear on many denominations of the riel.

Number 2: Built in the early 12th century (between 1113 and 1150) Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world.

Number 3: Weird things related to faith

Angkor Wat is unusually oriented towards the west, a direction considered as the direction of death in Hindu culture. What archaeologists and scholars disagree about is why ancient builders chose the opposite of the “standards” of the time.
The reliefs at Angkor Wat are read counterclockwise, another sign that the temple has a connection to the funeral ritual.
Also unusual at the time of construction, Angkor Temples is dedicated to Vishnu, a Hindu god, not for the Khmer’s present king.

Number 4: By the end of the 13th century, Angkor Wat was moved from Hinduism to Buddhism. Today, the temple is still used by Buddhists.

Number 5: Angkor Wat in Khmer language means “City of temples” or shortened to “Temple City”
