The most remarkable aspect of exploring Mongolia on a motorcycle is the complete absence of fences. Motorcycle riders can explore at will, carving their own paths across the steppe and riding wherever they want. The sense of liberation is tangible as you ride through landscapes where nomadic families tend their herds of sheep, goats, and horses, just as they have for centuries.

Mongoliaโ€™s nomadic culture makes an Explore Indochina motorbike tour unique. The countryside is populated by traditional herders, who move their families and livestock across the steppe with the seasons. As you tour the countryside, youโ€™ll spot gers dotting the horizon and smoke curling from chimneys as herders prepare their meals.

The wildlife in Mongolia adds another layer of wonder to the experience. Riders will encounter wild horses, marmots, gazelles, and soaring eagles. The steppes are also home to more elusive creatures, such as snow leopards and wolves, which roam the mountains and forests. Extreme motorcycle tours in Mongolia allow you to see the unspoiled beauty of Mongoliaโ€™s landscapes and feel the freedom to ride wherever the terrain takes you.

Back when we first got to Vietnam, the only motorcycles on the roads here were remnants of the Warsaw Pactโ€”Javas, MZs, Simpsons and Minsks. All our initial adventures up into the mountains and down the Ho Chi Minh Trail were done on these bikes, and when we formed Explore and started offering tours we settled on our two favourites: the 650cc Russian Ural and the 125cc Belarusian Minsk.

The Ural and the Minsk still have a special place in our hearts. We had so many adventures on them, and actually feel like we contributed to their history in some small way by supplying them to Gordon Ramsay, Charley Boorman, the BBC and the Top Gear team on their tours of Vietnam. So, here are a few examples of appearances these awesome motorcycles have made on television and film over the years!

650cc Russian Ural and 125cc Belarusian Minsk motorcycles are pieces of motorcycling history. Here are a few times they've been in the spotlight.

By now, weโ€™ve done this route more than a few times. Over 2,000km across Mongolia, deep into places you wonโ€™t find on most maps.

Itโ€™s long days on the bike - sometimes fast, sometimes technical. Thereโ€™s no tarmac for most of it, just open steppe, rocky tracks, river crossings, and endless sky. You can ride for hours without seeing another soul. The weather shifts fast, the scenery changes constantly, and every kilometre feels earned.

But itโ€™s not just about the riding.

Five nights are spent in traditional ger camps. Proper ones - tucked into valleys, near lakes, or out in the middle of nowhere. Wood stoves, felt walls, nothing fancy - but everything you need. Hot food, cold beers, and some of the best nights youโ€™ll ever have on tour. Thereโ€™s something about riding all day and then sleeping under a sky like that - stars so bright they donโ€™t look real.

Thereโ€™s always a mix of laughs, tired legs, and those quiet moments in between. Some riders come for the distance. Some for the isolation. Some just want to see if they can do it. Either way, everyone leaves with a story.

Weโ€™ll be back again on September 3rd for another classic Mongolian ride, and we can't wait. ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ณ

Weโ€™re heading back into the Himalayas on August 18.

Starting in Chandigarh and winding our way up through Shimla, Rampur, and into Batseri, that valleyโ€™s always unreal. Then it gets serious. Nako and Kaza for some altitude and cold starts, before we push through Kelong and on into Zanskar. That stretch to Padumโ€™s rough, but itโ€™s one of the best parts of the whole ride - wild, empty, no one around. From there, itโ€™s over the high passes to Kargil, then Lamayuru, and finally into Leh.

Twelve of us this time, full crew, no space left. Long days, thin air, brutal roads. Wouldnโ€™t have it any other way. ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ๏ธ

Just three days before we arrived, this lake was still frozen. ๐ŸงŠ

Lake Khovsgol is something else! Crystal-clear, ice-cold, and backed by snow-capped Russian peaks. We stay right on the shoreline during our Mongolia Magic Motorcycle Tour, soaking it all in from our lakeside lodge.

Some of the crew brave the chill for a dip, others take the smarter route - wrapped up, cold beer in hand, watching the sun melt into the mountains. Either way, it's one of those evenings you don't forget.

Always a standout moment on tour.

At 4,587 metres above sea level, Komic claims the title of the highest village in the world accessible by a motorable road. Getting here isnโ€™t just a ride โ€” itโ€™s an ascent into thin air, extreme isolation, and staggering beauty.

From the small outpost town of Kaza, the road winds its way up a brutal 20km stretch of switchbacks and loose gravel, clinging to the cliffs of the Spiti Valley. Every metre gained feels earned. The air gets thinner, the bikes struggle for breath, and the landscape becomes otherworldly.

At the top, Komic greets you with absolute stillness. A scattering of homes. A centuries-old monastery. No noise, no traffic, just the wind and the mountains. Itโ€™s remote, it's raw, and itโ€™s one of the most unforgettable destinations we ride to.

Our Himalayan High Tour heads out of Delhi on the 18th August, keep an eye on our socials for an insight into this fantastic adventure.
