🌤️ Visiting Vietnam in May? Here's what the weather actually looks like region by region. Read till the end to know what you should do.
May is one of the most misunderstood months to visit Vietnam. Some places are at their absolute peak; others are entering storm season. After running private day tours across the country, here's the honest breakdown:
🏙️ HANOI in May
Hot and humid, expect 28–33°C and the first proper rains of the year. Mornings are still pleasant (around 26°C), which is why we always start a Hanoi private day tour by 7:30am in May. By 1pm the heat hits hard. The good news: fewer tourists than spring, and the Old Quarter feels alive in a way it doesn't in peak season. A private guided tour in Hanoi with a local in May means iced egg coffee stops are non-negotiable. ☕
🏔️ HA GIANG in May
Late spring in Ha Giang is genuinely beautiful, 22–28°C in the valleys, cooler up on Ma Pi Leng Pass. The rice terraces are filling with water (the "mirror" stage that photographers love), and buckwheat flowers may still be blooming in some areas. Light showers are possible but the loop is fully rideable. May is one of the last good months before the summer landslide season starts in June.
🌾 SAPA in May
Sapa in May = the rice planting season. The terraces are flooded and reflect the sky, completely different scenery from the gold harvest in September. Temperatures sit around 18–24°C, so you'll actually need a light jacket for evenings (yes, in May). Some afternoon showers, but mornings are usually clear. Trekking is excellent if you avoid the muddiest trails.
⛵ HALONG BAY in May
May is the last great month for a Halong Bay private day tour from Hanoi before summer storms arrive in June. Sea is still calm most days, visibility is good, and the karst formations show beautifully in the soft morning light. Temperatures around 28°C, perfect for kayaking. Book early in the day; afternoon thunderstorms occasionally roll in by late May.
🌊 DA NANG in May
This is peak season for Da Nang. Weather is excellent, around 28–32°C, blue skies, calm sea, perfect for the beach. May also kicks off the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival, which is one of the best times to be in the city. A private day tour Da Nang → Hue → Hoi An in May is honestly the best version of that trip. The Hai Van Pass views are crystal clear, Hoi An lanterns glow at sunset, and you're not melting like you would in July.
🏝️ PHU QUOC in May
This is where it gets tricky. May is the start of rainy season in Phu Quoc meaning the west coast (where the famous sunsets are) starts getting rough seas and afternoon downpours. Early May is usually still okay; late May the rain picks up. Snorkeling at the An Thới islands becomes hit-or-miss. If Phu Quoc is on your list and you can shift dates, do it in March–April or wait till November.
🏙️ HO CHI MINH CITY in May
Ho Chi Minh weather in May is the official start of rainy season but don't let that scare you. Rain comes in 30–60 minute bursts, almost always in the late afternoon. Mornings are bright and slightly cooler than April (around 30°C vs 36°C). This is actually a smart time for a Saigon day tour with a local. Fewer tourists, lower prices, and a Cu Chi Tunnels private tour in the morning before any rain works perfectly. A private car in Saigon means you wait out the rain with a banh mi, not at a bus stop.
🗓️ The verdict for May travelers:
✅ Best regions in May: Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue (peak), Halong Bay, Sapa, Hanoi, Ha Giang
⚠️ Tricky in May: Phu Quoc (especially late May)
💡 Smart move: Combine North + Central Vietnam in May, both are working at the same time. Save Phu Quoc for a different trip.
May is also a quieter month between peak spring and peak summer crowds, which means private day tours feel even more private.
