I sell Sapa tours, but I wouldn’t recommend Sapa to everyone.
After many years working in Vietnam tourism, I’ve learned something important:
A good travel consultant shouldn’t try to sell every destination to every traveller.
Sapa is beautiful misty mountains, ethnic villages, rice terraces, cool weather and a completely different atmosphere from Hanoi.
But depending on your travel style, your schedule and the time of year, Sapa may not always be the best choice for you.
I WOULD recommend Sapa if you:
✅ Love mountains, nature and local culture
✅ Want to experience ethnic minority villages
✅ Enjoy cooler weather
✅ Have at least 2 nights / 3 days available
✅ Don’t mind several hours of travelling from Hanoi
✅ Prefer scenery and culture over nightlife or luxury
For these travellers, Sapa can easily become one of the highlights of Northern Vietnam.
I would think twice about Sapa if you:
❌ Only have 3–4 days in Northern Vietnam
❌ Really dislike long transfers
❌ Are travelling with very young children or elderly family members who may find steep walking difficult
❌ Expect clear mountain views every day
❌ Are visiting during periods when heavy fog or rain may limit the scenery
❌ Want a very relaxed trip without changing hotels frequently
For example, if this is your first visit to Vietnam and you only have four days, I would probably recommend:
Hanoi → Ninh Binh → Halong Bay
instead of trying to squeeze Sapa into the itinerary.
You will spend less time travelling and have more time actually enjoying Vietnam.
But if you have 7–10 days in Northern Vietnam, then Sapa becomes much easier to include:
Hanoi → Sapa → Ninh Binh → Halong Bay
That can be a fantastic first-time itinerary.
One more important thing
Please don’t choose Sapa just because you saw one perfect photo of green rice terraces on Instagram.
The landscape changes throughout the year.
Some months are green.
Some are golden.
Some can be cold, foggy or rainy.
That doesn’t mean Sapa isn’t beautiful.
it simply means you should choose it with the right expectations.
My job is not to convince every guest to visit Sapa.
My job is to understand:
How many days do you have?
Who are you travelling with?
What month are you coming?
What kind of experience do you enjoy?
Then I can tell you whether Sapa, Ha Giang, Ninh Binh, Pu Luong or another destination would suit you better.
