Cu Chi tunnels an underground tourist attraction

CNN has listed a system of tunnels in HCM City’s Cu Chi district as one of the world’s top underground tourist attractions.

The complex of tunnels was formed between 1946 and 1948 48 during the resistance war against French aggression.

During the Vietnam War, the tunnels, built on an area of the so-called “Iron Land” in Southern Vietnam, were used as hospitals, communication and supply routes, and living quarters for Vietnamese soldiers.

The tunnels, dug deep underground, can withstand destructive bombs. Air is taken in through the tunnel vents. The different areas of the system can be isolated when necessary.

The system is comprised of three floors, with the first 3m deep and able to resist artillery, tanks and armoured vehicles. The second floor is 5m deep under the ground and able to resist small bombs. The ground floor is 8-10m deep.

The complex has been preserved as a war memorial and a tourist destination.

Vietnam attends regional tourism, cultural cooperation meeting

Vietnam joined Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Indonesia at the third ministerial meeting on tourism and cultural cooperation, which was held in the Lao city of Vientiane on November 16.

Delegates at the event shared their view that tourism cooperation among ASEAN countries has been highly effective. Notably, the development of tourism in combination with cultural heritage has offered tourists opportunities to both enjoy landscapes and explore culture.

The attendees agreed that it is important to preserve cultural values to enhance the sustainable development of tourism. They also suggested intensified connectivity among countries to fully utilise cultural heritage to serve tourism.

The Vietnamese delegation, led by Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Vuong Duy Bien, asked the countries to further advertise the region’s tourism at international forums and exchange experiences in tourism management and development in an effective way.

Meanwhile, Lao delegates highlighted the Buddhist culture in the region and suggested the popularisation of Buddhism as one potential area of benefit. Tourism programmers, partnerships between the State and private sectors and the training of human resources for tourism could also be developed, they argued.

On this occasion, the six countries are set to present their cultural identities through arts performances at Laos’ That Luong festival on November 16 night.

Intensifying managing Chinese tourists arrivals in Quang Ninh

The Quang Ninh People’s Committee has worked with the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) to discuss measures to intensify the managing of travel and receiving Chinese tourists in Quang Ninh.

The Quang Ninh Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism reported that Chinese tourists were welcomed to Quang Ninh via Mong Cai road border gate and Hon G*i sea border gate. Currently, more than 39 travel agencies are welcoming and providing services for Chinese tourists in the province.

At the meeting, participants proposed building temporary regulations on managing travel activities for Chinese tourists arriving via the Mong Cai border gate. In the short term, the establishment of a travel club to create healthy competitiveness among businesses was put forward.

VNAT’s General Director Nguyen Van Tuan agreed with the proposal of building temporary regulations on managing travel activities for Chinese tourists arriving via the Mong Cai border gate.

He stressed that the welcome and travel activities for Chinese tourists in Quang Ninh remains a shortcoming because the market often has policy adjustments, requiring specific mechanisms to ensure the quality of services for tourists and promote the image and prestige of Quang Ninh’s tourism sector./.

VN, Japan to boost joint tourism

The two governments plan to join hands to reach the target of bringing 1 million Japanese visitors to Viet Nam and 200,000 Vietnamese people to Japan in 2015.

Viet Nam-Japan tourism co-operation would focus on exchanging visitors, providing technical support and developing human resources, said Nguyen Manh Cuong, deputy general director of the Viet Nam National Administration of Tourism.

In the fifth meeting of the Viet Nam-Japan Tourism Co-operation Committee last Friday, Cuong said Japan had announced that Viet Nam had been put in the country's list of strategic markets that Japanese visitors would travel to.

In Japan, there were many tourism promotion campaigns to lure Japanese people to come to Viet Nam's central region, especially tourism destinations in Khanh Hoa, Quang Nam, Thua Thien-Hue provinces.

The Japanese side also planned to open a direct flight to the region, which would be a driving force for Viet Nam to upgrade infrastructure to serve tourism development, Cuong added.

Chairman of the Viet Nam Tourism Association (VITA) Vu The Binh said that the association had established two travel clubs in the South and the North to welcome Japanese tourists. At the same time, VITA would call for the most prestigious and professional travelling companies to take part in the campaign of bringing Vietnamese visitors to Japan.

Binh said he hoped with the co-operation between VITA and the Japan Association of Tourism, enterprises of the two countries would have more chances to join hands in developing tourism.

According to the General Statistics Office, Viet Nam welcomed over 6.1 million overseas arrivals in the past 10 months of 2013, up 10.4 per cent against the same period last year.

In the period, the number of Japanese tourists coming to Viet Nam reached 500,000, an increase of 5.6 per cent compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, in the first eight months of the year, Japan welcomed nearly 53,000 Vietnamese visitors, up by 56 per cent compared to the figure of 2012's corresponding period.

Viet Nam set the goal of welcoming more than 7.4 million travellers in 2013, which can help earn around US$7.9 billion in revenues, up 15.6 per cent from 2012.
