Vietnam is one of those places where what to eat can become part of deciding where to go.

Some people come to Hanoi with Pho and Bun Cha already on their list. In Central Vietnam, Mi Quang and Hoi An Chicken Rice are worth making room for. Head south and the food changes again, with Com Tam, Hu Tieu and Banh Xeo.

Different regions, different tastes, and usually far too many things to try in one trip.

There’s more than one side to Southern Vietnam.

Start in Ho Chi Minh City, where busy streets, local markets, old landmarks and cafés are all part of the experience. From the city, a day trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels offers a very different look at the South and its history.

Then head towards the Mekong Delta, and the surroundings begin to change. Life here has long been shaped by the river, with small boats, narrow canals, fruit gardens and communities along the water. It feels far removed from the pace of Ho Chi Minh City, even though it is only the next part of the journey.

Then continue to Phu Quoc and the trip changes again. Spend a few days by the sea, go island-hopping, take the cable car, enjoy an evening out, or simply leave some time with nothing planned.

Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc each show a different side of the South. Put them together, and you get a journey that moves naturally from city life to the river and finally to the sea.

With 4–5 days, Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta work well together. With 7–8 days, there is time to add Phu Quoc without trying to squeeze too much into the trip.

Phu Quoc, more than just a beach holiday.

Clear blue water, tropical beaches and beautiful sunsets are usually the first things people think of when they hear Phu Quoc. But there is much more to do once you are here.

Take an island-hopping trip, swim and snorkel around the smaller islands, ride the cable car across the sea, enjoy water activities or explore Grand World. In the evening, there are shows, entertainment and plenty of places to go out.

Or simply leave a day free for the beach and enjoy doing very little.

This is one of the reasons Phu Quoc works for so many different travelers. You can have a relaxing beach holiday without missing out on the fun and experiences around the island.

Couples can enjoy a few quiet days by the sea. Friends can mix beach time with island tours and activities. And for families travelling with children, parents and grandparents, there is enough variety for different ages to enjoy the trip in their own way.

You can do a lot in Phu Quoc, or very little. Both work.

For a Southern Vietnam journey, it is also a nice change of pace after the energy of Ho Chi Minh City and the river life of the Mekong Delta.

Mekong Delta, a greener side of Southern Vietnam.

After the lights and busy streets of Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta shows another side of Southern Vietnam: rivers, canals, gardens, local workshops and daily life along the water.

Small boats move through coconut canals. Tropical fruits are sold on the river. Local families keep traditional workshops running, and village scenes appear along the way.

The Mekong has its own rhythm. It is lively in a different way, with boats, markets, gardens, local flavors and the colors of river life.

For travelers who want to see more than the city, Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta can make a beautiful Southern Vietnam route.
