We just finished an incredible 10 days on our World School Camp Borneo.

Our guides were absolutely fantastic, and the kids had a blast!

We got to see Orangutans, baby Green Sea Turtles, Dolphins, Crocodiles, Proboscis Monkeys, Silver Langurs, Bearded Pigs, Viper, and Flying Lemur.

The guides were full of knowledge about the rich cultures and history of the many different peoples who occupy the lands, and were super engaging with the kids.

This is a great place to explore wildlife and history. To be there where it all comes to life is really special.

And the best part of it all…

The kids all connected and built new lasting friendships.

At first glance the famous Vietnamese basket boats look like a fun tourist activity (and they definitely are!), but these little round boats have a fascinating history.

Known locally as "thúng chai", basket boats were traditionally used by Vietnamese fishermen. During the French colonial period, they became popular because they weren't classified as boats and therefore weren't taxed.

Families wove them from bamboo, waterproofed them with resin, and used them to reach their fishing boats or fish the rivers and coastline.

Today they're an iconic part of Vietnamese culture, and stepping into one is a chance for your kids to experience a small piece of that history firsthand.

For homeschooling families who appreciate and prioritise real-world learning, this is the real deal.

History, geography, culture, and understanding the lived experiences of local people throughout the ages simply can't be replicated in a classroom.

At first glance, these notes might not look all that similar.

But when you're standing at a market stall, digging through your purse while your kids are hanging off your legs... or you're trying to hop off a boat and quickly find some cash to tip your guide... they can look surprisingly alike.

The second scenario actually happened to me.

In the rush, I accidentally handed over a 500,000đ note instead of a 20,000đ note.

For a little context, at the time of writing:

💵 20,000đ is worth about AU$1.08

💵 500,000đ is worth about AU$27.08

Needless to say... that was a much more generous tip than I'd intended! 😅 It actually hurt a little when I realised what I'd done.

But, it's a mistake that's easier to make than you might think.

When you're navigating a new country, and currency, juggling a language barrier, carrying bags, dealing with the heat and humidity, and trying to keep tired kids happy, your brain has a lot going on. I've since heard of quite a few other travellers who've done exactly the same thing.

So here's a little tip that has helped me...

I keep my larger notes completely separate from my smaller ones.

That way, if I'm buying a drink, grabbing a snack, paying for a Grab, or leaving a tip, I know exactly where to reach without having to double-check every note in the middle of a busy moment.
