The ancient art of Sbek Thom shadow puppetry is an absolute must-experience family cultural activity that no one can skip when exploring Cambodia with kids. Recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage, this centuries-old craft allows children and parents alike to work side-by-side with master artisans, using small mallets and sharp metal punches to bring mythical characters and jungle animals to life before holding them up to flickering oil lamps to watch the shadows dance across the wall.

It starts here, on the basalt highlands around Buรดn Ma Thuแป™t. Deep red volcanic soil, rows of coffee cherries ripening in the highland sun, and a small metal phin releasing one slow drop at a time.

Around the farms live the รŠ ฤรช, M'nรดng and other highland communities, whose gong culture is recognized by UNESCO. Here, coffee is not only a crop. It is a rhythm of life.

Trapped in a quiet eddy of the Chao Phraya River, Koh Kret's Mon artisan community keeps a centuries-old pottery tradition alive by hand-carving intricate, lace-like patterns into iron-rich red clay using delicate brass tools passed down through generations. These unglazed Kwan Aman ceramics are an absolute must-discover traditional craft that no one can skip when exploring the hidden outskirts of Bangkok, offering a mesmerizing, earthy look at a vanishing heritage that has thrived on this tiny island since the late 18th century.

This is the tomb of Emperor Khai Dinh, the twelfth Nguyen ruler, built between 1920 and 1931. Eleven years, for a single mausoleum. Artisans pressed pieces of porcelain and colored glass into concrete across the columns, walls and ceiling, turning imported crockery and mirror into some of the most detailed mosaic work in Vietnam. It is the smallest of Hue's royal tombs, and the most extravagant.

From a distance it looks like carved stone darkened by time. Up close, it glitters. That gap between the first glance and the second is the whole reason to go.

Part of the UNESCO World Heritage complex of Hue, and one of those places a photo never quite prepares you for.

Step out of the traffic and the heat into the Central Post Office. A high arched ceiling, green iron frames, hand-painted maps from another century, and the quiet scratch of pens at wooden counters where people actually post letters.

This is a city of contrasts. Within a few hundred metres you move from the Reunification Palace, frozen on the April morning of 1975, to Notre Dame Cathedral now emerging from nearly a decade of restoration, to Ben Thanh Market where the bargaining never stops. Colonial calm sits right beside neon energy.

That is the surprise first-timers remember. Saigon never idles, but it rewards the traveler who slows down for a drip coffee on a street corner, or writes one postcard by hand. The rush and the stillness belong to the same street.

Perched high above the limestone karst maze of Phang Nga Bay, a sharp clifftop viewpoint reveals a vast, mirror-flat sea dotted with jagged ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฑ ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐˜€ as the first rays of dawn pierce the morning mist.

Koh Samet Nang Chee is an absolute must-visit viewpoint that no one can skip when exploring southern Thailand's dramatic coastline. Unlike the crowded beaches further south, this hidden vantage point offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic vistas in Southeast Asia, looking out over thousands of uninhabited limestone islets rising straight from the emerald waters. Whether you hike up before sunrise to watch the sky erupt in fiery shades of pink and orange or camp overnight under a brilliant canopy of stars, it provides a profoundly peaceful, otherworldly escape from the usual tourist trail.

At dusk the traffic stops, the neon signs fall quiet, and four hundred years slip back into place. Families lower floating lanterns onto the Thu Bon, each one carrying a small wish downstream. Above the water, the 400-year-old Japanese Covered Bridge glows softly, reopened in 2024 after a careful two-year restoration. Every lantern overhead was still shaped and stretched by hand, the way the craft has survived here for generations.

In Chuรดng village, about 30 kilometres southwest of Hanoi, the day begins in mist. Six mornings a month, on set dates of the lunar calendar, a market appears before sunrise and trades in almost one thing only: the white conical hat, the nรณn lรก.

Tucked away in the mountains near the Laotian border, Thailand's Nan Province remains one of the country's most fiercely protected secrets, completely untouched by the massive commercial tourism seen in Chiang Mai or Phuket.

Once an independent kingdom with its own distinct dialect and art traditions, Nan offers a masterclass in slow travel. The region is famous for its intricate, centuries-old temples like Wat Phumin - home to the legendary "Whispering Lovers" mural - and winding mountain roads that pierce through cloud-shrouded valleys. Traveling here means exploring quiet rural villages, cycling past endless rice paddies, and experiencing a side of northern Thailand that feels frozen in time.

From 28 August, one train glides from Vietnam's imperial city to the door of the world's largest caves, in just 4 hours.

For 4 hours, the Huแบฟ to Phong Nha train is the destination itself: regional food served at your seat, live traditional music, and a VIP carriage dressed like a boutique hotel, all while the country slides past your window.

Opening 28 August, with introductory fares through the end of the year.
