🇰🇭 BANTEAY CHHMAR – THE HIDDEN SECRET OF THE KHMER EMPIRE

Beyond the famous temples of Angkor lies a very different side of Cambodia.

Hidden in the northwestern countryside, Banteay Chhmar is a vast 12th–13th century Khmer temple complex associated with the reign of King Jayavarman VII. Far from the crowds of Siem Reap, its weathered towers, collapsed galleries and ancient carvings create an atmosphere of discovery.

The real treasure is in the bas-reliefs.

Carved into the sandstone walls are remarkably detailed scenes of Khmer battles against the Cham, royal processions, religious stories and everyday life. One of the most striking images is a multi-armed Avalokiteshvara carved on the western gallery.

But Banteay Chhmar is more than an archaeological site.
The surrounding villages offer a glimpse into rural Cambodian life, with opportunities to cycle through the countryside, ride an ox cart, visit local artisans, enjoy a picnic prepared by a women's group or stay overnight in a traditional homestay.
