"I just paid $18 for a bowl of pho."

That's what one of my guests messaged me less than an hour after landing in Saigon.

At first, I thought they were joking.

Then they sent me a photo.

The restaurant looked beautiful.

Air-conditioned.

English menu.

Right in the heart of District 1.

The pho probably wasn't bad...

But it definitely wasn't worth $18.

I replied with one question:

"Do you mind if I show you another side of Saigon?"

The next morning, I took them to a small local pho shop.

No fancy sign.

No Instagram-worthy interior.

Just rows of tiny plastic stools, steaming bowls of broth, and locals grabbing breakfast before work.

The owner didn't speak much English.

The menu was entirely in Vietnamese.

The bowl cost around 70,000 VND (less than $3).

After the first spoonful, they looked up, smiled, and said,

"This is the pho I flew to Vietnam for."

That moment reminded me of something I tell every first-time visitor:

There are two Saigons.

Comfortable. Easy to find. Familiar.

The tiny family-run restaurants.

The biggest mistake people make within 30 minutes of landing in Saigon.

It happens before they even see the city.

They walk out of the airport...

Someone smiles, offers them a taxi, helps with their luggage, and says,

"Taxi? Very good price."

It feels convenient.

But sometimes that "good price" ends up being 2–3 times what the ride should actually cost.

I've met travelers who paid more for a 20-minute ride from the airport than they spent on dinner for two.

The funny part?

Most of them had already downloaded Grab.

They just didn't know:
🚕 Where to wait for their driver.
📍 Which pickup point to use.
💳 Whether to pay by cash or card.
❓ If the driver was even allowed to enter the airport.

So they took the first taxi they saw.

Here's what I recommend:

✅ Download Grab before your flight.
✅ Connect a payment method (or prepare cash).
✅ Follow the signs to the designated ride-hailing pickup area.
✅ Compare the fare in the app before accepting any ride.

Safety Tip
Phone snatching happens — especially near busy roads.

Honest truth?

Ben Thanh Market is one of the most overpriced places in Saigon.

Tourists pay 3–5x the real price.

If you want real local markets with:
✅ Better food
✅ Better quality
✅ Real prices

You need to go elsewhere (I wrote the exact names & addresses in my guide).
