French Influence in the Heart of Saigon
When you visit Ho Chi Minh City, you might feel like you've stepped into France, as many buildings here are heavily influenced by French colonial architecture.
First, the City Hall was built between 1898 and 1909. If you look closely, you can spot the letters “VHS” hidden in its design — standing for Saigon Hôtel de Ville, its original French name. This impressive building showcases a blend of Baroque and Rococo architectural styles. During the French colonial period, it served as the administrative center for the city government. After 1975, it became home to the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee and Council.
Second, the Notre Dame Cathedral, a true masterpiece of French Gothic design. Built around 1880, it was constructed entirely with materials imported from France. Its twin bell towers and intricate stained-glass windows are absolutely breathtaking. Even today, local Catholics attend mass here every weekend, though the cathedral is currently under renovation until 2027.
Third, the Saigon Central Post Office, located right next to the cathedral, is another iconic landmark. The post office combines Gothic, Renaissance, and French colonial elements. Step inside, and you’ll see a stunning vaulted ceiling, vintage telephone booths, and an old map of Indochina on the wall. It’s not just a functioning post office, but also a window into Vietnam’s past.
Beyond these landmarks, you can find many other buildings with strong French influence, such as the Saigon Opera House, the Independence Palace, and the Hotel Continental Saigon.
Each tells its own story of history, culture, and transformation through time.
So, which of these French-inspired treasures impresses you the most? ✨
