If you’re looking to experience a quieter and more intimate side of Hoi An, The Merchant River Cruise offers a new perspective on the ancient town.

Launching this May by Namia River Retreat, this luxury dinner cruise drifts along the Thu Bon River - a historic trading route that connected Hoi An to merchants and spice traders across Asia for centuries.

A different side of Hoi An, carried by the river that has always been at its heart.

In Laos, the alms-giving ceremony is a traditional Buddhist practice that takes place every day in the early morning. It is called "Tak Bat." As the first light touches the quiet streets, monks clad in vibrant orange robes walk along the streets to collect alms and offerings from locals and tourists.

For Laotians, this is a ritual to sow seeds of good fortune and accumulate merit. Offerings usually include sticky rice (khao niao), sweets, or fruit. For visitors wishing to observe or participate, respectful behavior is essential: dress modestly, remain quiet, avoid flash photography, and offer alms while kneeling or seated as a gesture of humility and respect.

Onigiri Asakusa Yadoroku

Japan is well-known for sushi or ramen, but one could argue that onigiri is a food straight from Japan's soul. Recently added to the Oxford English Dictionary, “onigiri” has officially entered the global lexicon.

In Tokyo, snuggled within the old streets of Asakusa, Onigiri Asakusa Yadoroku has been quietly serving handmade onigiri since 1954. The simple dish combines a rice ball wrapped in seaweed with premium ingredients. This special place is now in the hands of Yosuke Miura, its third-generation owner, and has earned a Bib Gourmand in the MICHELIN Guide Tokyo.

Save it in your lists for your next trip to Japan!

April 30th marks Reunification Day in Vietnam, a public holiday that carries significant historical meaning.

Step out into the streets during these days, and you’ll feel a different energy. Flags lining the avenues, quiet moments of reflection, and a sense of pride that provides a jubiliant undercurrent to the day.

The occasion’s importance is evident in the way the city slows, gathers, and remembers the past. For those traveling in Vietnam at this time, the 30th offers a deeper glimpse into the country as a place shaped by memory, resilience, and continuity.

Some stories are not told all at once, some are told slowly, layer by layer.

At the upcoming Skift Asia Forum 2026 in Bangkok (April 28–29), industry leaders will gather to explore what is coming next for travel across Asia and beyond.

This year’s theme, "Scaling Growth & Reinvention," reflects a shifting landscape wherein expansion alone is no longer enough. Growth today means:
- Building more agile, resilient models
- Designing experiences that truly resonate
- Leveraging data and partnerships to unlock new demand

For the first time, Women Leading Travel will also be hosted in Asia, spotlighting voices shaping the industry’s future. Urbanist Travel will be there to contribute to the conversations defining what travel becomes next.
