It is true that the OSS, especially the Deer Team, played an important role in supporting the Viet Minh during the final stages of World War II and in the early days of the August Revolution. They not only provided intelligence and military training, but also medical support, helping the Viet Minh treat malaria and other diseases. More importantly, the Deer Team was the only American group present at the September 2 Independence Day celebrations in Hanoi, and they witnessed this historic moment.

The role of the OSS:

The OSS (Office of Strategic Services) cooperated with the Viet Minh because they considered the Viet Minh to be the strongest force against the Japanese in Indochina. The OSS provided the Viet Minh with intelligence, military training, and medical support.

Medical support:

The OSS provided the Viet Minh with medicines, especially anti-malaria medicines, to help them get better health and prepare for the uprising.

The Deer Team:

This was a special unit of the OSS, operating secretly in Vietnam. They were present at Tan Trao, witnessing and supporting the Viet Minh in the preparation for the August Revolution.

Witnessing the Independence Ceremony:

The Deer Team was the only group of Americans allowed to participate and witness the declaration of Vietnam's independence on September 2, 1945 in Hanoi.

Historical context:

At that time, Japan had surrendered to the Allies, but was still present in Vietnam, while the French were being held by the Japanese. Other countries such as Laos, Cambodia, Russia, and China did not play a significant role in this event.

Note:

The OSS's cooperation with the Viet Minh was part of the American strategy to defeat Japan, and also part of the struggle for Vietnam's independence.

Later, the relationship between the Viet Minh and the United States became more complicated, and eventually led to the Vietnam War.
