Da Lat - Capital of endemic birds in Vietnam

Stunning Birds of the Di Linh Birdhide

Di Linh offers a colorful showcase of the birds of Vietnam's South Central Highlands. Birding in Cat Tien National Park - Birding in the trails

Silver Pheasant - A precious jewel of the forests

In the past, Silver Pheasant populations declined not only due to hunting by local communities for food, feathers, and trade, but also because of habitat loss. Several years ago, Silver Pheasants could occasionally be observed in some places, such as Bach Ma and Cuc Phuong National Park. However, the birds remained extremely cautious and usually disappeared quickly into the forest when disturbed, making it quite difficult to take photos. They have recently been observed regularly on the Dalat Plateau, thanks to conservation efforts aimed at protecting both the species and its habitat.

Silver Pheasant is represented by five subspecies in Vietnam, one of which occurs on the Da Lat Plateau and is endemic to this region, making this region an important part of Vietnam’s avian diversity. While other subspecies show the typical silver-white upperparts, this form displays black-and-white vermiculation. This special plumage is not only effective in avoiding predators, but also makes this bird more elusive to observe in the wild.

Encountering this species in the wild is a reward from nature, creating indescribable feelings when a true natural wonder finally emerges from the forest. Like many other precious jewels, like other stunning pheasants, the Silver Pheasant needs to be protected not only for the present but also for the future.

Partridges of Vietnam – Hidden Birds of the Forest

Partridges are a group of ground-dwelling birds belonging to the Phasianidae family. They are well known for their shy and cautious behavior, always staying alert to everything around them. They spend most of their time walking quietly on the forest floor, feeding on seeds, fruits, shoots, and small invertebrates while hidden in dense vegetation.

Vietnam is home to five species of partridges, which can be observed in habitats ranging from lowland evergreen forests to mountain forests across the country. Among them, the Orange-necked Partridge is a near-endemic species and one of the most desired birding targets in Vietnam. Furthermore, the Tonkin Partridge, a subspecies of Scaly-breasted Partridge endemic to northern Vietnam, is especially notable for its restricted distribution and distinctive appearance.

Observing the partridges in the wild is an exciting experience, as they are usually heard before they are seen. Their shy and secretive behaviors make every encounter impressive and unforgettable. 𝑪𝒉𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒏𝒖𝒕-𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝑳𝒂𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒖𝒔𝒉 (𝐼𝑎𝑛𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑐𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑙𝑎 𝑘𝑜𝑛𝑘𝑎𝑘𝑖𝑛ℎ𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑠) is one of the rarest birds in the world. Discovered only in 2001, it is found exclusively in a small area of montane forest in Central Vietnam.

Its population is extremely small and declining due to habitat loss, making it Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List.
