Hung Kings’ Commemoration Day is a significant Vietnamese national holiday observed annually on the 10th day of the third lunar month to honor the legendary Hung Kings, the traditional founders of Vietnam. In 2025, this day falls on Monday, April 7.

To commemorate this occasion, the Vietnamese government has announced a three-day public holiday from Saturday, April 5, to Monday, April 7, 2025. This allows workers to enjoy an extended weekend in observance of the festival.

The Hung Kings’ Festival is celebrated with various cultural and religious activities, primarily centered around the Hung Temple in Phu Tho Province. The festival typically spans several days, with the main ceremonies occurring on the 10th day of the lunar month. These ceremonies include processions, offerings, and performances that pay tribute to the contributions of the Hung Kings in establishing the nation.

This holiday serves as a time for Vietnamese people to express gratitude to their ancestors and reflect on their national heritage.

Kite flying is a cherished tradition in Vietnam, symbolizing joy, freedom, and cultural heritage. In the Mekong Delta, this pastime is particularly vibrant, with communities gathering during the dry season’s breezy afternoons to fill the sky with colorful kites.A distinctive feature of Vietnamese kites is the incorporation of bamboo flutes, known as “diều sáo.” As these kites soar, the flutes produce melodic sounds, creating a serene and enchanting atmosphere. Crafting a diều sáo involves attaching multiple ovoid wings to a bamboo frame and mounting graduated bamboo flutes on top. The faster the kite flies, the more magical the sound produced by the flutes. In the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho, the “Artistic Kite Season” is a notable event that showcases the region’s enthusiasm for kite flying. Held annually, this festival features the release and performance of giant kites by teams and individuals, demonstrations of traditional kites, and cultural entertainment programs. The 2025 event took place from March 1 to March 16 at Tay Do Square, attracting thousands of locals and tourists who marveled at the vibrant displays and participated in the festivities. These gatherings not only celebrate the art of kite making and flying but also serve as communal events that strengthen social bonds and preserve cultural traditions within the Mekong Delta.
