For travelers exploring Vietnam, this can be as simple as carrying a reusable bottle from the beginning of the trip and looking for trusted refill points at hotels, cafés, restaurants, airports, or designated public facilities. THE BLACK LITTLE CAKE THAT CARRIES A PIECE OF CENTRAL VIETNAM 🖤🌿

At first glance, Bánh Ít Lá G*i might not look like the most tempting Vietnamese dessert. Its dark, almost black exterior is surprisingly simple—but break it open, and you'll find a soft, chewy layer of glutinous rice wrapped around a sweet filling of mung bean and coconut.

The colour comes from lá g*i, or ramie leaves, which are boiled, finely pounded, and mixed with glutinous rice flour to create the distinctive dough. The cakes are then shaped by hand, traditionally into small pointed forms, wrapped in banana leaves, and steamed until glossy and wonderfully chewy. 🌿

But the real reason to try Bánh Ít Lá G*i when travelling through Central Vietnam isn't simply its flavour. In Bình Định, these little cakes have long been part of family occasions—appearing at ancestral death anniversaries, weddings, festivals and as gifts for relatives. A large historical site can be fascinating for adults and surprisingly exhausting for children. But sometimes, you don't need to make history simpler. You just need to make children curious about it.

During a family visit to Hue's Imperial Citadel, a local guide noticed the younger travelers were starting to lose interest. So instead of continuing with a traditional explanation, she changed the pace. She gave the children small clues: find a dragon hidden in the architecture, spot a royal symbol, discover a garden gate, then look for the next clue. Suddenly, the children weren't being “taken around” the Citadel anymore. They were leading the way. 🔎

It worked because the Imperial Citadel is full of details that reward close observation. From the imposing Ngo Mon Gate to intricate decorative motifs and carefully planned courtyards, there is always something for curious eyes to discover. The Complex of Hue Monuments was designed according to traditional Eastern principles, with architecture, colour, direction and symbolism playing important roles throughout the site.

TRUE COMMUNITY-BASED TOURISM: WHERE DOES YOUR TRAVEL MONEY ACTUALLY GO? 🌱

“Community-based tourism” sounds good on a brochure. But for a traveler, there is a more useful question to ask: Does the community actually benefit from your visit?

True CBT is not simply staying in a homestay or visiting a village. The important part is participation and benefit sharing. Local families should have a meaningful role in providing tourism experiences—from hosting guests and preparing meals to guiding activities and making traditional products—and a fair share of the income should remain within the community. In well-managed models, part of that value can also support shared needs such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, or conservation. 🤝

This changes the way we should travel. Instead of treating a village as a backdrop for photographs, choose experiences where local people are active participants. Eat at a family-run home rather than a large tourist restaurant. Buy a handmade product directly from its maker. Choose a local guide who can share the place from personal experience. And most importantly, ask whether the people you meet have a genuine voice in how tourism develops around them.

Vietnam already has community-based tourism models across its northern mountains, central regions and Mekong Delta, showing that tourism can create livelihoods while helping communities maintain their cultural and natural heritage.
Sustainable travel doesn't always require doing something extraordinary. Sometimes, it simply means being more intentional about where you spend your money and whose hands it reaches. 🌿

Far in northeastern Vietnam, where limestone mountains fold into endless green valleys, two very different natural worlds sit just minutes apart.

In August, the rainy season gives Bản Giốc Waterfall an impressive sense of power. The Quây Sơn River pours over its multi-tiered limestone cliffs, filling the valley with mist and the deep, constant sound of rushing water. From a local bamboo raft, you can get close enough to feel the spray while looking back at the enormous karst landscape surrounding the falls. 🌿
