One of the funniest things you might notice when you visit Vietnam:

It can be incredibly hot outside…

…and somehow everyone is completely covered up. 😂☀️🇻🇳

Long sleeves. Gloves. Masks. Hats. Jackets.

For many Vietnamese people, it’s not about staying warm at all.

It’s about avoiding strong direct sunlight and protecting the skin — especially when riding a motorbike.

And there’s also a beauty culture where lighter, more even-looking skin has traditionally been preferred by many people.

So if you see someone wrapped up from head to toe on a sunny Vietnamese afternoon…

They’re not cold.

They’re fighting the sun. 😂☀️

If you’ve never been to Vietnam, the traffic might sound completely chaotic. 😂🛵📣

And one thing you’ll notice very quickly:

The horns.

But here’s something many first-time visitors don’t realize.

A honk doesn’t always mean:

“GET OUT OF MY WAY!” 😤

It can simply be a way of saying:

“I’m here.”

“I’m passing.”

“Watch out.”

Of course, sometimes people do honk because they’re impatient or frustrated.

But after spending some time here, you may start understanding the difference.

One of the first Vietnamese food combinations that surprises many visitors:

Fruit… with chili salt. 🌶️🥭😂

Green mango, ambarella, guava, Vietnamese plums and other slightly sour fruits are often enjoyed with a salty, spicy chili-salt dip.

It sounds strange until you try it.

Then suddenly the sour + salty + spicy combination makes perfect sense. 😋🇻🇳

So when you see Vietnamese people carrying a little bag of chili salt…

You know what to do. 😂

One of the most confusing things for first-time visitors in Vietnam:

Someone says “yes”… but you’re still not sure if they actually agreed. 😂🇻🇳

In Vietnamese communication, “yes” can sometimes mean “I hear you” or “I understand,” rather than a definite agreement.

It’s often about context, politeness and the way people communicate.

So if you hear “yes, yes” but something still feels unclear…

Don’t panic.

Just ask again — politely. 😄

That little plastic stool is actually part of everyday Vietnamese street life.

But that doesn't mean you need to keep buying plastic bottles throughout your trip.
