At just 19 years old, Andrew of Phu Yen made a courageous choice that would forever shape the history of the Catholic Church in Vietnam.

Born around 1625, he became one of the first Vietnamese catechists, serving alongside the Jesuit missionaries with remarkable zeal. Although still very young, Andrew devoted himself to sharing the Gospel and strengthening the faith of the early Christian community.

In 1644, during a period of persecution, he was arrested for refusing to renounce his faith. Despite his youth and the opportunity to save his life, Andrew remained steadfast, professing his love for Christ until the very end. He was martyred in Quแบฃng Nam, becoming the first martyr of Vietnam.

More than three centuries later, in 2000, Pope Saint John Paul II beatified Andrew of Phu Yen, presenting him as a model of youthful faith, courage, and missionary spirit for Catholics around the world.

Today, pilgrims can visit the Shrine of Blessed Andrew of Phu Yen in Da Nang to pray, reflect on his inspiring witness, and learn about the beginnings of the Catholic faith in Vietnam.

His story reminds us that holiness is not measured by age, but by the courage to remain faithful.

๐ŸŒฟ LA VANG PILGRIMAGE CONGRESS 2026 โ€“ PREPARATIONS IN FULL SWING ๐Ÿ™

As July comes to an end, the atmosphere at the Our Lady of La Vang Sanctuary is becoming more vibrant than ever. With less than a month to go before the 32nd La Vang Pilgrimage Congress (August 13โ€“15, 2026), preparations are being accelerated day by day.

The main square and Stations of the Cross area have been completed with concrete paving, green lawns, drainage, and lighting systems. The surroundings are being beautified with trees and clear signage to welcome pilgrims from near and far.

Inside the Basilica, the underground hall is being finalized to host presentations during the Congress, while open spaces around the sanctuary are being prepared to accommodate large numbers of pilgrims for camping and gatherings.

Hidden among the peaceful pine forests of Vietnam's Central Highlands stands one of the country's most beloved Marian shrines - Our Lady of Mang Den.

What makes this shrine so unique is the story behind its statue.

The original statue of Our Lady was brought to the area by French missionaries in the early 1970s. During the years of war, the church and surrounding mission were heavily damaged. The statue was struck by explosions, and both of Our Lady's hands were broken off.

Years later, local Catholics rediscovered the damaged statue and carefully placed it on a hill in Mang Den. Rather than replacing it with a new one, they chose to preserve it just as it wasโ€”a silent reminder of the suffering endured during wartime and the enduring faith that survived.

Today, pilgrims affectionately call her "Our Lady with No Hands."

Although the statue has no hands, countless pilgrims believe that Our Lady continues to embrace, comfort, and intercede for everyone who comes to pray. People travel from across Vietnam seeking peace, healing, hope, and strength before this humble yet deeply moving image.
