NUI COC LAKE LEGEND
In the old days, at the foot of Tam Dao Mountain there was a poor boy named Coc living by collecting woods. He worked very hard all year but still couldn’t have enough food to eat. Because he was so poor, no girl wanted to marry him. When he was sad, he had only a friend – that was a flute. At that time, in the area of Day River and Gam River there was a rich official named Quan Lang. Quan Lang had only a daughter named Cong. Cong was not only beautiful but also sang and danced very well. Every boy in town wanted to marry her.
In a dry year Cong came to Quan Lang to work as a servant. When he felt lonely, he often fluted to forget the sadness. And the Coc’s flute sound moved the girl heart. Quan Lang got know about that and became very angry. He forced Coc do very dangerous works but with the help of a fairy and wild animals Cong did all the work well. But all of this didn’t make Quan Lang pleasant. He locked his daughter and let his troops run after Coc. Coc came back to his hometown and waited for Cong. He waited and waited until his body transformed into a Mountain but Cong hadn’t come yet.
At home, Cong missed her love Coc and she cried every day until all her tear became the river. Since then in Dai Tu district, Thai Nguyen province we have Cong River and Coc Mountain.
The sad love story between Cong and Coc is like Vietnamese Romeo and Juliet love story with an unhappy ending due to the different social positions. But they still decided to wait for each other.
