Did you know that the 'Right to Roam' movement started in the East End of Glasgow? Or that the Clyde used to have a vibrant swimming community? Or that the burn that St Mungo founded the city on, that ran right through the city, was built over and is now hidden from view? Just a few of the incredible things I learned during 'Our Dear Green Commons' workshop at the brilliant galgael at the weekend.
We learned from urban commons movements seeking co-created alternatives to gentrification and privatisation, asking what’s needed most in these times of polarisation, conflict, and systemic unravelling. The vision? Viewing the commons as vital infrastructures of care and mutual support.
Some Highlights included:
🌊 Reimagining the River Clyde: Davey Anderson shared details on , a project radically reimagining our relationship with the river. What if we could swim in the Clyde again? Imagine we could drink from the river? If we could help her heal, rest and recover? What if we listened to the river’s needs? Clyde Alive has produced a beautiful manifesto for the Clyde and what she could become once more. IMy bookclub's reading Elif Shafak's 'There are Rivers in the Sky' at the moment (which is amazing!), and this session really resonated, especially as they touched on 'daylighting' the Molendinar Burn - had literally never heard of this a few months ago and now it's everywhere ✨️
✊ Reclaiming Political Commons - Eva Schonveld () explored how local governance doesn't have to be boring or frustrating, and how we can address shared trauma around power without scaring people away.
🍎 Orchards & Land as Commons - Fergus Walker from highlighted small-scale, cooperative food growing as a blueprint for community land ownership.
❤️🩹 Health Justice - Toby Pepperrell broke down health inequities, enclosures, and how urban agroecology can support decentralised public health sovereignty.
Such a powerful reminder that another way of connecting, growing, and caring for our shared spaces is possible and necessary.
Thanks GalGael for a brilliant event 👏
