Tours In My Taxi Tours In My Taxi. London Black Cab Tours.
2,000 years of London history in a Licenced London Taxi. My American guests always seem to like it!

Kings and Queens, wars, plagues, beheadings and the occasional fire in a time machine, disguised as a black cab.

In the map room down in the Churchill War Rooms, there’s a board that refers to the action on 15th September, 1940. This became known as Battle of Britain day.

For six years, the Map Room at the Churchill War Rooms was staffed day and night. Then, in August 1945, the war was over. The phones fell silent… one by one, the officers left their desks… and for the first time in 6 years, the lights were switched off.

These might be the most famous sugar cubes in London. They belonged to Wing Commander John Heagerty, who worked in the Map Room in the Churchill War Rooms for 5 years. He accidentally left them in his desk drawer at the end of the war.

On the wall of the Map Room in the Churchill War Rooms is a chart showing how many Allied ships were being lost during the Atlantic convoys. There are two big drops in the chart. This was where the Enigma code used by German U-boats was finally cracked by the Bletchley Park code breakers, including the legendary Alan Turing.

How many eggs are there in 6,000 tons of eggs? This was the question that puzzled Winston Churchill when he learned of a particular ship’s cargo in one of the Atlantic convoys in World War II.

If the Cabinet Room was the heart of “The Hole”, as Churchill’s War Rooms were known to its occupants, then the Map Room was its nerve centre. The line of phones in the middle of the desk were known as “The Beauty Chorus” as they would light up and flash.

Winston Churchill wanted an atmosphere of positivity in the Cabinet Room in his secret World War II bunker. A handwritten note was placed on the desk with a message that was originally a quote from Queen Victoria after she was presented with a rather gloomy report on the Boer War.

In the Cabinet Room in Churchill’s War Rooms a buzzer was placed on the desk so members of the Cabinet could ask the Royal Marine sentries to fetch them things. The most popular request was… alcohol.

The Cabinet Room in Churchill’s secret bunker was deep underground but as a keen amateur builder, Winston realised that a direct hit would kill everyone in the room. A 5 foot layer of concrete was pumped in. This became known as… The Slab.

This might be my favourite thing in the Cabinet Room. Look at the arms of Churchill’s chair from which he presided over 115 War Cabinet meetings. Both of the arms are gouged with scratches from his nervous energy.
