10 days at Rothera with the British Antarctic Survey - it feels longer as so much has happened, but it also feels like no time at all. I'm settling in, literally learning the ropes (and skidoos!), and loving the wildlife! Weather permitting, it's my first day in the field tomorrow on the Larsen glacier to extract science equipment - digging arms are ready!

Finally landed at Rothera, and welcomed by the runway traffic light controller!

Over 24 hours since leaving London and I'm in Punta Arenas, Chile, preparing for a whole new adventure.
Earlier this year I applied for a job as a Field Coordinator with the British Antarctic Survey, and I was lucky enough to be offered the job. Medicals, dentals, kit fittings and three months of extensive training later I'm finally at the 'Gateway to Antarctica'. The journey to this point has been more than I ever imagined. In the next few days I will hopefully be stood on my seventh continent, my home for the next 16 months. It feels like a privilege, an adventure and a challenge all rolled in to one. Look out for the updates!!

A little late but better than never!

Keen to climb independently, couple Tom & Saskia have joined me for a couple of evening learn to lead sessions over the last two weeks at Raven Crag in Langdale, and in the Duddon Valley. Tom has progressed to onsight lead climbing, and Saskia is confidently ghost leading and refreshing old skills.

Alice is developing into a competent second, and successfully completed her first Severe climb on Thomas, a three star multiputch route at Wallowbarrow in the South Lakes.

Well done to all of them, and a big thank you for giving me the opportunity to consolidate my teaching skills for my Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor award ❤️

More teaching Learn to Lead trad climbing this weekend with Jill & Monique.
The weather was less than helpful, but with some careful planning, contingency plans and thunder storm avoidance we managed plenty of climbing, multiple abseils, belay building, gear placement practice and ghost leads (leading with a safety rope). Monique finished the weekend with her first trad lead 💪 and Jill made amazing progress in both confidence and learning!

A fab evening on Wallowbarrow Crag this evening teaching Alice who is new to trad climbing. Plenty of firsts for her, including nailing a one-handed clove hitch! She's also now done her first multipitch, learnt different anchors, perfected gear removal and we even found the time for an abseil. She's going to be a natural!

It's been a busy May, starting with a three day Lakes 3000s challenge for City Mountaineering. That was followed by leading a couple of Snowdon trips for Hike Snowdon and Adventure Cafe, and walk/cycle/kayak Coniston Challenge for Adventurous Ewe. I succumbed and worked my only Duke of Edinburgh this season with a delightful school for RAW Adventure near Mold in North Wales, and just finished a three day wild camping trip for City Mountaineering. This was interspersed with some of my own work teaching lead climbing, a trip to Cambridge (more to follow!) and lots if my own personal climbing in Scotland. Phew!

Enjoying some good weather on Sn**ch at Tremadog - thanks to Martin Mayfield for the photo!
