Egrets have a surprisingly clever way of keeping themselves clean. 🪶🌾

They have specialized feathers that break down into a fine, powdery substance. After feeding, they can use this powder down to help clean and maintain their feathers.

So that elegant, spotless look? It takes a little work behind the scenes.

Lowcountry Field Note: Even the marsh’s most graceful hunters have their own grooming routine.

Come and enjoy the Lowcountry sunset the way locals do while floating on a boat around the marsh. A cloudy afternoon brings out the best colors!

It may look like a quiet stretch of grass and water, but the Lowcountry marsh is one of the busiest nurseries along the coast. 🌾

The shallow waters and dense marsh grasses provide young fish, shrimp, crabs, and other marine life with places to feed, hide and grow.

That’s one of the reasons the marsh is so important and why there’s always more happening out here than meets the eye.

Let’s head Out Yonder and see how magical the marsh can be.

It was a great day of Mudlarking along the Stono River today! Plenty of shark teeth, pottery shards, pipe stems, ray crusher plates, shark vertebrae and bone fragments. You never know what you’ll come across on the creek banks.

Here’s a piece of maritime history with a Lowcountry connection. ⚓🌳

During the War of 1812, cannonballs famously bounced off the hull of the USS Constitution. The secret was its incredibly strong construction, including dense, heavy Southern live oak used in the hull.

The ship earned its legendary nickname, “Old Ironsides,” after British sailors reportedly remarked that her wooden sides seemed to be made of iron.

A remarkable reminder of just how strong the Lowcountry’s live oaks can be.

There’s something pretty special about finding a piece of the past where you least expect it.

Fossilized shark teeth can wash up along the Lowcountry coast, giving us a tiny glimpse into the ancient creatures that once moved through these waters.

So next time you’re exploring the shoreline, look down. That ordinary-looking piece of sand and shell might be hiding a story that’s millions of years old.

The Lowcountry has more to discover than meets the eye.

Sometimes fewer people make for a better experience. 🌾🌊

At Out Yonder Excursions, our trips are designed for small groups of up to 6 guests.

That means more space to relax, more opportunities to ask questions and more time to enjoy the scenery without feeling like you're part of a crowded harbor tour.

It's a more personal way to get out on the water and experience the quieter side of Charleston.

The Lowcountry marsh may look peaceful, but it’s constantly changing beneath the surface. 🌾🌊

As the tides move in and out, the same stretch of marsh can look completely different, mudflats appear, creeks fill and fish and birds shift with the water.

Every tide changes the story. And that’s part of what makes exploring the Lowcountry so fascinating.

A great Lowcountry experience is about more than spotting an egret, it’s knowing why it’s there, what it’s doing and what role it plays in the marsh. 🪶🌾

That’s what makes an Out Yonder excursion different. Captain Chris takes guests beyond the typical routes into remote tidal creeks, sharing the natural history, wildlife, and hidden details that make the Lowcountry so remarkable.

You don’t just see the marsh. You get to understand it.
