How much time do you really need for a trip to Alaska? ✈️ Whether you have one week or two, there's plenty you can fit into your itinerary!

📍 3-4 days: Short on time? Plan a long weekend getaway! Communities like Juneau and Ketchikan are just a short flight from Seattle, offering opportunities to explore local shops, enjoy fresh seafood and take in stunning coastal scenery.

🏔️ 7 days: Spend a week getting to know one region! Explore Southcentral Alaska with a scenic train ride, a glacier cruise in Prince William Sound and time discovering communities like Anchorage or Seward. Or head to Fairbanks for a mix of outdoor adventures and local attractions with close accessibility to Denali National Park and Preserve.

🚢 7-14 days: Experience Alaska by land and sea! Pair a cruise through the Inside Passage with a few days exploring the Interior, or take a ferry between coastal communities before heading inland to visit national parks, museums and cultural attractions.

🚂 14+ days: Have a few weeks to explore? Even better! Build a longer itinerary that takes you across multiple regions, from the coastal communities of Southeast Alaska to the wide-open landscapes of the Arctic. With more time, you can include guided excursions to remote destinations and spend extra days in your favorite places.

Whether you're visiting for a few days or a few weeks, there's an Alaska adventure for every itinerary!

You don't need weeks to have a memorable Alaska vacation. The key is choosing an itinerary that fits the time you have!

Thinking about visiting Alaska in the winter? ❄️ From what to pack to what you can do, we're answering a few common questions to help you plan your trip!

🌡️ How cold does it get?
It depends on where you're going! Coastal communities like Juneau and Sitka generally have warmer winter temperatures, while inland destinations like Fairbanks can experience temperatures well below zero. Check the local forecast and pack plenty of warm layers.

🌌 When can I see the northern lights?
Aurora viewing season generally runs from mid August through mid April. For your best chance, head somewhere with dark skies, away from city lights and plan to stay a few nights. Clear skies and aurora activity are key!

🚗 How can I get around Alaska in the winter if I don’t want to drive?
There are plenty of ways to explore Alaska without driving! Sit back and enjoy the scenery on a train ride, book a guided motorcoach tour or take in snowy landscapes from above on a sightseeing flight. Transportation options vary by region and season, so plan ahead!

🐕 What is there to do besides see the northern lights?
Plenty! Try dog sledding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing or soaking in natural hot springs. Just remember that activities vary by region and availability.

Not every Alaska trip needs a packed itinerary. Sometimes, the best way to experience the state is to slow down and enjoy what's around you.

🚗 Take the scenic route: Pull over at scenic overlooks, stretch your legs on a short trail and enjoy the drive without a tight schedule.

☕ Explore like a local: Browse family-owned shops, visit a neighborhood cafe and discover what gives each Alaska community its character.

🏡 Unplug and unwind: Settle into a cozy cabin, watch the sunrise peek above the mountains and enjoy a morning with nowhere else to be.

There's a lot to consider when planning an Alaska trip, and the time of year you visit is a good place to start!

☀️ Summer brings long days for glacier cruises through the Inside Passage, road trips through Southcentral, hiking in the Interior, guided bear viewing in Southwest and exploring the Arctic under the midnight sun.

❄️ Winter offers a completely different experience. Head to the Interior for northern lights viewing and dog sledding, enjoy snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in Southcentral or experience a quieter side of Alaska's coastal communities.

Not every activity is available year-round, so choosing your season can help narrow down where to go and what to add to your itinerary.

One of the best things about traveling in Alaska is how different each day can look. You could spend one day cruising past glaciers with nature surrounding you, and the next wandering through a small town, stopping at local shops, galleries and breweries.

Planning a winter trip to Alaska? ❄️ Here's what to bring to stay warm, comfortable and ready to explore. 👇

🧥 Warm, insulating layers: Pack thermal base layers, fleece or wool midlayers, and an insulated winter jacket to stay comfortable in changing temperatures.

🥾 Winter boots: Waterproof, insulated boots with good traction are essential for exploring snowy and icy areas.

🧤 Cold-weather accessories: Don't forget insulated gloves or mittens, a warm hat, wool socks and a neck gaiter to protect against the cold.

🎒 Adventure essentials: Bring sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, hand warmers and a small daypack for outings.

📸 Camera and extra batteries: Alaska's winter scenery is picture-perfect! Cold temperatures can drain batteries faster, so bring extras and keep them warm.

Pro tip: Alaska's winter conditions vary by region, so check the forecast for your destinations and ask local guides about any activity-specific gear before your trip. Some tour operators will even supply some winter gear for your trip!

On Oct. 18, Alaska Day marks an important moment in the state's history: the formal transfer of Alaska from Russia to the United States in 1867.

Alaska's story began long before this event. For thousands of years, Indigenous peoples of Alaska have called this land home, and their cultures, traditions and communities continue to shape our great state today.

Alaska is home to incredible people, rich histories and unforgettable places. Today is an opportunity to reflect on the state's past while recognizing the people and cultures that make Alaska what it is today.
