First of all, I have NEVER let the demographic of ANY travel company prevent me from enjoying what they offer. Holland America happens to be my favourite cruise line because it feels like I’m travelling with 1300 pairs of grandparents and I LOVE THAT! But I think it’s time river cruising companies start updating their marketing because the average age of river cruisers is skewing into the late thirties and early forties!

We love us some culture, culinary, history and sophistication too!

An age-old myth still links "cruise" with formal dining rooms and stuffy dress codes. Some folks still envision river cruising circa 1880 when Thomas Cook and Son launched the first leisure cruises on the Nile River. Gone are the days of full-skirted women donning parasols and gentlemen enjoying life on deck in dinner jackets and pocket watches. Modern-day river cruising is cozy, casual, and culturally immersive, suitable for river enthusiasts of all ages.

As a single parent for the past five years, I am HYPER vigilant about carrying the correct documentation with me when I travel with my kiddo. Copies of EVERYTHING, and a notarized letter from my co-parent. I’ve seen far too many disappointed faces when parents get to the airport/border and they’re challenged or turned away by Border Security!

Things are about to get a bit more complicated if you’re travelling to Mexico with kids in the future:

Mexico’s Senate has approved new legislation aimed at protecting children from trafficking and exploitation. Under the new rules, hotels and other tourist accommodations would need to verify the relationship between adults and any children under 18 at check-in.

So what does that mean for you?

Once it’s in place, you may be asked for extra paperwork showing you’re allowed to travel with your child. That could include:

✅Your child’s birth certificate listing the parents’ names
✅Custody or legal guardianship documents, if they apply to you
✅A parental consent letter if your child is traveling with grandparents, other relatives, or without one or both parents

Please note: these are precautionary suggestions, not an official list of required documents.

When does this start?

The Senate approved it on October 7, 2026, but we’re still waiting on official publication, an effective date, and details on exactly what documentation will be accepted.

No need to panic or alter your vacation plans yet.

I’ll keep an eye on this and share updates as soon as I have them, because I’d much rather you be prepared than surprised at the front desk! 😊
