📅 Born on this day in 1772, the Romantic poet & philosopher Samuel Taylor Coleridge! 🎂

A native of Ottery St Mary in Devon, Coleridge went on to help reshape British literature. Alongside his close friend William Wordsworth, he is credited as a co-founder of the Romantic movement, drawing inspiration from the dramatic landscapes of the Lake District whilst living at Greta Hall in Keswick. It was during these productive years that he penned classics like The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, cementing his place in literary history. 📚

Why not pick one or two of to help explore Coleridge's legacy across England: from the banks of the River Otter in Devon, to the hills of Cumbria and back down to his memorial in Poets’ Corner at Westminster Abbey?

📅 Born on this day in 1632, Sir Christopher Wren. A native of East Knoyle in Wiltshire, Wren was already renowned as an astronomer & mathematician before he became one of England's most celebrated architects. After the Great Fire of London in 1666, his designs helped reshape the capital, crowning it with the magnificent dome of St Paul's Cathedral. ⛪️

His legacy stretches across London's skyline & beyond: dozens of churches, the Royal Observatory & Old Royal Naval College at Royal Museums Greenwich, Hampton Court Palace, the Royal Hospital Chelsea, the Sheldonian Theatre at University of Oxford & many more.

📅 Born on this day in 1674, Richard "Beau" Nash.

A native of Swansea, Nash arrived in Bath in 1704, quickly setting the rules of polite society as Master of Ceremonies and helping shape the Georgian city we know & love today. So successful was he in this role that his services & skills were later also employed in Tunbridge Wells. 🎉

Despite being a notorious gambler, and often short of funds, on his death in 1761 the often extravagant dandy was given a suitably lavish funeral at Bath Abbey.🪦

📅 On this day in 1834, much of the ancient Palace of Westminster burnt down, following a devastating chimney fire. 🔥

The job of rebuilding the iconic site was overseen by Sir Charles Barry & Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin, although by the time the project was completed in 1870 both men had been long dead. 🪦

Barry's original estimate was £724,986 - around £96 million today. The final bill topped £2 million, which is well over £260 million in today's money! 💷

The palace faced destruction again during WWII, when it was hit by bombs on at least 14 occasions. The worst raid, on 10th May 1941, destroyed the Commons Chamber. Thankfully, Westminster Hall & Big Ben survived, and the rebuilt Chamber reopened in 1950. 💪

🏛️ Why not explore the Westminster district, with its famous abbey & parliament buildings, with one of and discover the stories behind the stonework?

📅 On 15th October 1066 the people of England awoke to life on the brink of major change. The previous day William, Duke of Normandy, had defeated King Harold II in a battle that would change the course of English history. Hastings! ⚔️

The Norman Conquest transformed England’s ruling classes, reshaped its landscape and left a lasting mark on our language, laws & culture. To mark his victory, William founded Battle Abbey with its high altar said to mark the exact spot where Harold fell. ⛪️

For the first time in centuries the Bayeux Tapestry, depicting the events leading up to the Norman conquest, is back in England. The 230 foot long embroidery is currently on display at the British Museum until July 2027. With tickets booked up well into the new year, why not ask one of to show you 1066 country whilst you wait? 🙂
