🦆Duck... duck... goose?
Did you know Fort Pulaski National Monument is home to more than 200 species of birds? Many are year-round residents, while others are seasonal guests.

One of our favorite summertime visitors has been making regular appearances around the park – the Black-bellied Whistling Ducks! Regularly found in marshes and wading water, Fort Pulaski NM is a prime destination for these birds. Very social and often found in large flocks, during breeding season they are more usually seen in single mating pairs like these two.

These handsome waterfowl are one of a kind – almost. Black-bellied and Fulvous are the only two North American species of Dendrocygna - the subfamily of whistling ducks. Called ducks because of their similar size, feeding techniques, and nesting habits (like that of Wood Ducks), Whistling ducks are arguably more ‘goose-like’. With longer necks, legs, and a more upright posture, they resemble small geese more than other ducks. While not their only vocalization, their unique anatomy does allow them to produce their namesake whistling call.

Whistling ducks also form long-term pair bonds and are monomorphic, meaning the plumage of hens and drakes is not distinct; both characteristics absent among other ducks but shared among swan and geese.

Georgia skywatchers are in for a treat early Sunday morning if weather conditions allow it.

Six planets — Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune — will align in a giant arc just before sunrise. The first four planets in the lineup should be visible to the naked eye, but Uranus and Neptune will require binoculars or a telescope. A crescent moon joins the planetary parade, too.
