Hedgehogs..
We don’t just rescue goats and alpacas at Dovedale Animal Sactuary.
For the past 10 years or so we’ve also been looking after and wintering Hedgehogs. Providing a safe haven for them to thrive..
These little critters are now a common sight wandering around the farm and often guests will see one scurrying and sniffling in the evening whilst enjoying these wonderful sunsets..
however if you see one in the day.. please stop and think..
because they are nocturnal animals and in this hot weather, often suffer because they can’t find water or food.
We’ve placed a number of shallow feeders and water stations around the farm, and check on these daily..
Sadly the heat and dry conditions cause food shortages, this is because the normal diet for hedgehogs aka bugs, beetles as well as slugs and worms don’t thrive in hot weather either.. the ground is so dry there is no water.. this means that food is in short supply and very quickly a hedgehog can starve.
So please be aware..
help by putting water and cat food in areas that are sheltered, even if you don’t see a hedgehog, they like to hide!
It may take a while for them to find the food and water but they smell it out and if you consistently keep this topped up they won’t travel far..
Also don’t worry if you just see one.. they are solitary creatures normally and only get together in the spring!
Sadly these beautiful gentle little creatures are dying out and they are imperative to our eco system.. so please do your little bit and help us keep these little critters safe fed and watered and protected. Thankyou

DAYLIGHT ROBBERY( Daylight Fox) warning injured chicken photo!
We had a daylight visitor mid morning… and this is where I’m torn.. fox looked at us with intelligence and a “please feed me” gaze.. that was after already killing two chickens.. it then went and killed another before I saved the ones I could.. hopefully chicky Dee will be okay.. she’s been nursed and is still with us, albeit a torn wing.. but antibiotics.. iodine, an egg or two for nourishment and lots of tlc… will hopefully see her through… nature v nurture… everyone deserves to live… it’s a hard life in the country. Even a rescue farm can’t save everyone 😢😢😢 though I would if I could.

So pleased we could help out and offer a new home to this beautiful girl .. she lost her mate, so having a new bunch of friends to play with will be the best tonic for her… we’ve already fallen in love with her..

Absolutely stunning at Lower Damgate Farm this morning.. with pictures like this, no one sees the work involved in feeding, breaking Ice, ensuring that there is clean water and food, warm bedding and shelter available for our animals in minus 7-9 degree conditions.. but when you stop and breathe.. our world is amazing and breathtaking.. it’s all worth it.. xx
