Salt to the Sea was my favorite book of September. This book is set near the end of WWII and follows several wartime refugees trying to flee German and Russian troops.

There are moments of complete sadness, anxiety, and cheers for the characters and their stories. And when the unthinkable happens on an over-crowded ship, the Wilhelm Gustlaff, it’s heart-wrenching.

Salt to the Sea is well-written and you feel connected to each of the characters, their decisions and struggles to stay safe and alive.

I listened to the audiobook, as I usually do, and enjoyed the variety of voices for the characters. It brought them to life and made them feel real.

Our trip to the Biltmore is right around the corner and we only have 2 spots left!

We will be heading to Asheville Dec 4-6 to tour the Biltmore Estate by candle light as it’s decked out for the holidays.

Our trips starts at a creamery for homemade cheese and ice cream and dinner in Asheville.

Saturday we stop at a European bakery for breakfast before heading off to Biltmore Village and Antler Village for shopping, w**e and an early dinner. We then take a tour of the house dressed in all its finery and head out for the evening.

Sunday is a brunch with mimosas and then we are on our way home!

It’s the perfect trip to get you in the holiday spirits with ladies over 50 who love to travel!

Kathryn Stockett (author of The Help) writes another epic story set in the South.

The Calamity Club is a depression-era fiction about women from various backgrounds and how their stories unfold together, creating unlikely bonds and friendships. It focuses on Charlie, Birdie and young Meg and how they form connection and trust through some troubling times.

It is a longer book, but well worth the time to devote to the story. I listened to the audiobook and loved the characters voices and how they brought life to the story. (I did listen at 2x speed to make the longer book a bit quicker and still had a great experience with the book.)

Don’t let the length of the book put you off, enjoy the women’s stories!

If you’re looking for a quick get-away this fall, Margaritaville at Sea may have you covered.

We went last year on one of their cruises - stopping at Progresso, Mexico and Key West — and had a great time on the ship and port. We had an amazing excursion to Mayan ruins and a cenote in Mexico, and rode a tram and walked around Key West trying out pie as we went.
