In 16 Days of Traveling in Tanzania - South and West part of Tanzania, Here I bring you a tourist gem 💎 known as Gombe National Park found in Kigoma region Tanzania.

Gombe National Park

Gombe National Park is one of Tanzania’s most extraordinary wildlife destinations, famous for its wild chimpanzees, untouched rainforest, and dramatic setting along the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Though it is Tanzania’s smallest national park, Gombe is globally celebrated for its rich biodiversity and the groundbreaking chimpanzee research conducted by Jane Goodall since 1960.

Located in the western part of Tanzania in the Kigoma Region, Gombe stretches along steep valleys and forested mountains that descend into the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tanganyika — the world’s second-deepest freshwater lake. The park can only be accessed by boat, which adds to its remote and adventurous charm.

Gombe National Park is best known for:

Chimpanzee Trekking – Visitors hike through dense tropical forest to observe chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Watching them interact, groom, and move through the trees is an unforgettable experience.

Pristine Nature – The park features lush rainforest, waterfalls, bamboo forests, and scenic hiking trails with breathtaking lake views.

Wildlife Diversity – Besides chimpanzees, Gombe is home to olive baboons, red colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, bush pigs, and numerous tropical bird species.

Lake Activities – The clear waters of Lake Tanganyika are perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and relaxing after forest treks.

Scientific Importance – The park became world-famous through Jane Goodall’s pioneering studies that transformed human understanding of chimpanzee behavior and conservation.

The best time to visit is during the dry season from June to October, when chimpanzee trekking is easier and wildlife viewing is more rewarding.

For travelers exploring southern and western Tanzania, Gombe offers a rare combination of adventure, wildlife, research history, and untouched natural beauty — truly a hidden tourist gem of Tanzania. nationalpark

Day 5 of 16 Days — As I continue discovering hidden tourist gems across the Southwest and coastline of Tanzania, I bring you the breathtaking Kalambo Falls — one of Africa’s tallest single-drop waterfalls, where nature, history, and adventure meet in spectacular fashion.

The waterfall drops about 221 metres (725 feet) in a single uninterrupted plunge, making it the second-highest single-drop waterfall in Africa after Tugela Falls in South Africa.

Historical & Archaeological Importance

Kalambo Falls is internationally famous not only for its beauty but also for its archaeological discoveries. Ancient stone tools, wooden artifacts, and some of the earliest known evidence of controlled fire use in sub-Saharan Africa were discovered there.

UNESCO Status

The falls and surrounding archaeological area are listed on the UNESCO Tentative World Heritage List because of their geological and prehistoric significance.

Travel Information

Closest major town (Zambia side): Mbala

Access from Tanzania is usually through the Rukwa Region

The site is remote, so visitors often travel with local guides or tour operators

As I continue with my 16 Days journey exploring the hidden gems of Southern Tanzania, I had a wonderful opportunity to pass through the busy and vibrant Nakonde/Tunduma One Stop Border Post on the Zambia side.
This important border crossing connects Tanzania and Zambia and stands as one of the major gateways linking East and Southern Africa. The atmosphere here is truly unique — a blend of cultures, languages, transport, business, and people from different parts of Africa moving together every single day.
