Unusual requests during the route or when preparing a private, bespoke tour can be rather educational.

During all my years growing up in Scotland, I had no idea that we had carnivorous plants.

Thanks to a request by one of our current guests I am now keeping an eye out as we walk in scenic spots for Butterwort, one of these carnivorous, yet pretty plants.

Every day is a school day, even for those of us who know a great deal about this magical country.

Did you know that around the shores of Scotland there can be sightings of sharks?

Huge basking sharks patrol these waters and are around 10m - 11m (30' -33').

These are our largest fish and not at all dangerous, but sightings are rare and should be reported to mcuk.org

Currently we have guests on a boat trip enjoying the marine life around Mull and looking to get a glimpse of these large distinctive creatures 🤞. Seals, Eagles, Puffins & Dolphins are easy on the right tour, but this is a wee bit more challenging.

Scotland.
Mountains, Castles, Clans, Hairy Cows, Lochs and Legends.

These are all things that certainly draw people to Scotland. If art is your passion, you may be surprised to find that you can see works by Rembrandt, Picasso, Vermeer, Van Gogh, Botticelli, Constable and many more. The great news is that most of our galleries are free, so even if you have very limited time, it costs nothing to simply pop in.

At the Burrell collection, a free gallery near Glasgow there is a collection of over 9000 pieces. At least 14 of these pieces are by the sculptor Auguste Rodin (you may recognise his work ‘The Thinker’).

Often a piece of art causes you to stop and spend a little more time in admiration. This life-size piece ‘Eve After the Fall’ was once such sculpture during our last visit. The large model is rough and raw, whereas the later smaller version has a smooth finish.

Rodin’s model fell pregnant during the period of modelling and found it difficult to pose for long periods, causing flaws in the piece. The artwork was left unfinished for 18 years, until Rodin revisited the piece describing the flawed sculpture and pregnancy as a ‘fortunate accident’ and appreciating the raw appearance.

The Burrel collection is one of the greatest ever assembled by a collector, which was later given to the people of Glasgow for all to enjoy.

What is in a tour?

This week is a good example of the Little Scottish Treasures Variety of Tours.

With four very different experiences being conducted simultaneously.

Louis Tour - A family who had a limited time in Scotland but wanted to truly capture the essence of the country in a single day, involving Lochs, Mountains, Hairy Cows, a Castle, Distillery and much more.

Peter's Tour - A family of three from the US on a 9 day vacation where we planned the whole visit, from airport meet & greet, Highland Games booking, all attractions and a castle stay. A vacation where they could relax and let us take care of everything.

Carolina's Tour - Touring in Spanish with a family of 5 from Mexico, thus was a Spanish speaking Tour exploring the very best of the Higlands at a gentle pace, taking their time and immersing themselves in both our folklore and magical landscapes.

Andy's Tour - Andy had a family with two small children. A tour tailored to allow the adults to relax and enjoy their vacation while the children were entertained, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

When you come to Scotland and are looking for a tour, a bespoke Little Scottish Treasures experience will ensure you get something that is specifically designed around you and especially for you.

Today's Little Treasure - Maggie Dickson.

You will find that most pubs in Scotland have a story behind their name and often a ghost or two who can not bring themselves to leave the place.

Today’s treasure is a pub called Maggie Dicksons, in the very popular area of Edinburgh called the Grassmarket.

Maggie was an unfortunate soul, born in the early 1700’s and fell pregnant out of wedlock during a time when this would ruin one’s reputation and future prospects. After concealing the pregnancy Maggie’s child was born prematurely and died soon after.

She tried in vain to hide the body but was discovered and brought before the courts.
Maggie was sentenced to hang for her crime, right here in the Grassmarket, a common place for entertaining the crowds with a little corporal punishment.

There was nothing special about this day in 1724 or the hanging of a young 22-year-old lady for the crime of ‘Concealment of Pregnancy’, or so people thought.

As the cart carrying Maggie’s body trundled toward her burial place, Maggie woke up. Whether by some miracle or poor rope work on the hangman’s part, Maggie was still alive and according to Scots law could not be punished again for the same crime.

Maggie went on to become a local legend, forever known as ‘Half-Hangit Maggie’ and she now has joined the likes of Queen Victoria, Arthur Conan Doyle and George Heriot by having the greatest honour bestowed upon her… A pub bearing her name.

Todays Daily Treasure.
A Triangular Castle.

A larger than usual treasure, this is Caerlaverock Castle.

It takes a little more effort to get to Caerlaverock Castle as it lies around seven miles south of Dumfries, close to the border with England.

But this is a trip well worth making: Caerlaverock is one of the most attractive and interesting castles in Scotland.

There are a number of things that help set Caerlaverock apart. The most striking is the waters of its broad inner moat, coupled with its unique shape, a large triangle with its apex at the huge northern gatehouse,

The castle's turbulent history owes much to its proximity to England, and you can enjoy a siege warfare exhibition to see how in 1300, 60 defenders held off the mighty 3,000 strong medieval army of England's Edward Longshanks.

The siege of 1640 was the castle’s last. It was brought about by Lord Maxwell’s loyalty to Charles I during his struggles with the Covenanters. The garrison held out for 13 weeks before surrendering.

Afterwards, the castle was stripped of valuable fixtures and fittings, and its great south curtain wall demolished so that Caerlaverock could never again be used as a place of defence.

Damage caused by the Covenanters during and after the siege was never repaired, and what you see today is pretty much what was left in the summer of 1640.

Today's Daily Treasure.

A little detail in a well-known castle.

As you enter castles with sandstone construction like this one, 'Doune Castle' look out for marks near the entrance.

This type of score can also be seen in the kitchen.

It is thought that this was where guards with little to do and a lot of time on their hands would sharpen their daggers, and possibly the holes were made while sharpening arrow heads.

Remember to book your tours with a company whose guides accompany you at attractions, ensuring Little Treasures like this are not missed.

Today's Daily Treasure.

The world's oldest football.

There is written evidence of football being played in the UK as far back as 1314, and we know that in 1497, King James IV of Scotland paid a sum of money for the supply of 'fut ballis'.

This particular one could be one of those balls as it was found in 1970, behind some panelling in the Queens chambers at Stirling Castle. The panelling was put there during renovation work in 1543, not long after the birth of Mary Queen of Scots.

Was Mary's mother into a spot of sport within her chambers, or were the workers having a 'kick about' during a break? whatever the reason it got there, we are glad that it can be visited along with other treasures at the Stirling Smith Gallery. A free gallery and museum in the centre of Stirling.

The ball itself is smaller and lighter than a modern football and has an inflated pigs bladder inside. An item like this would have been expensive in its time, but to have a surviving example is priceless.
