So, I am aware that my last couple of posts have centred heavily on one bike (and of course, its riders)
There are a few reasons for why this moment was so special to me.
1. The first presentation I ever saw at a Horizons Unlimited Meeting in 2013 was by this couple, Peter and Kay Forwood, where they spoke about their 13 year journey with this unconventional Harley across the world to all 193 countries.
At the time, I was amazed by not only their choice of bike but what they had done with it, in a world that had a lot less roads and technology than exists today.
I remember sitting at the dinner table with them but I was just another face in the crowd.
Fast forward 13 years and I was able to accomplish my dream of sharing my travels (although without my bike next to me). Unknown to me, they were in attendance and the fact that my presentation mentioned them by name, served as a great ice-breaker to re-introduce myself.
2. With the formal presentation out of the way, I continued to (self-admittedly) fan-girl over them being there and spoke to them. It was surreal hear stories of the challenges they faced with the bike in far flung places like the depths of Africa in Mongolia in our conversation. Even more so when I could relate to some of the places I had ridden too!
3. I couldn't resist asking to sit on a bike that has seen so much of the world and once I felt that seat, I instantly understood what benefits this bike brought for a long distance journey. Enough so that I started checking how much a Harley would cost...
After my last trip, COVID and my health issues since, I had almost set aside the prospect of another long ride but just as I had been inspired 13 years ago, I can feel the flame re-kindling once again...
Now, just as I did back then, it will be a slow yet considered plan to work up towards the next big ride.
