What do a Triumph Scrambler from UK and Suzuki GSXR from AU have in common?

- 50/50 tyres
- Conquered Central Asia (granted the Scrambler, and it's rider, have been on the road for 3 years so far and seen a lot more!)
- Means of transportation for a loaded pie at Harry's Cafe de Wheels

So, I am aware that my last couple of posts have centred heavily on one bike (and of course, its riders)

There are a few reasons for why this moment was so special to me.

1. The first presentation I ever saw at a Horizons Unlimited Meeting in 2013 was by this couple, Peter and Kay Forwood, where they spoke about their 13 year journey with this unconventional Harley across the world to all 193 countries.

At the time, I was amazed by not only their choice of bike but what they had done with it, in a world that had a lot less roads and technology than exists today.

I remember sitting at the dinner table with them but I was just another face in the crowd.

Fast forward 13 years and I was able to accomplish my dream of sharing my travels (although without my bike next to me). Unknown to me, they were in attendance and the fact that my presentation mentioned them by name, served as a great ice-breaker to re-introduce myself.

2. With the formal presentation out of the way, I continued to (self-admittedly) fan-girl over them being there and spoke to them. It was surreal hear stories of the challenges they faced with the bike in far flung places like the depths of Africa in Mongolia in our conversation. Even more so when I could relate to some of the places I had ridden too!

3. I couldn't resist asking to sit on a bike that has seen so much of the world and once I felt that seat, I instantly understood what benefits this bike brought for a long distance journey. Enough so that I started checking how much a Harley would cost...

After my last trip, COVID and my health issues since, I had almost set aside the prospect of another long ride but just as I had been inspired 13 years ago, I can feel the flame re-kindling once again...

Now, just as I did back then, it will be a slow yet considered plan to work up towards the next big ride.

Over the weekend I had the pleasure and privilege to attend the first Horizons Unlimited Travelers Meet in Thornton, QLD, along with ~130 other motorcycle travellers.

13 years ago I had attended my first event and was enthralled by the presentation on the opening night, after dinner, of an Australian couple (Peter & Kay Forwood) who had travelled with their Harley to EVERY COUNTRY (193 at the time)

I was already anxious to be presenting in the same opening night slot only to find out that the same couple was right there in the audience! As if that pressure wasn't enough, the opening slides of my presentation mentioned them as a core inspiration for my own travels!

That was only the start of the weekend though. Over the coming days, I met so many others, some new, some after a long time since the last meeting and some who were in the midst of their own journeys!

Of notable mention were a Dutch couple on the final leg of their ride from Netherlands to Sydney and a solo female rider on the last stretch home of a 2 year non-stop ride from Alaska to NZ.
And of course, the most amazing and friendly couple ever, Ken & Carol, whose travels span decades and with a bike that has almost 1,000,000km on it (most overseas)

In the coming days, I will post a more about the people I met and the stories they shared (a few of countless, I'm sure)

In 2016 I presented at a Horizons Unlimited (HU) event about "Dreaming of an RTW" which covered my slow but sure progression from a road/track rider to longer and more complex rides.

At that point, doing a "big" adventure was still a dream for me.

A decade on, I will be presenting at the first HU event since COVID about accomplishing my dream and all the new learnings that has brought with it.

I am conscious that my last post here was almost 1 year ago but preparing for this presentation (at the last minute as usual) has made me realise the importance of not only properly documenting my journeys but also sharing them.

It was a Horizons Unlimited Travelers Meeting in 2013 that really stoked the fire for me as I was lucky enough to attend alongside the founders of the community, overseas travelers who were on their RTW journeys and also the couple with the most traveled motorcycle in the world, Peter & Kay Forwood.

I have found it difficult to find the motivation to put pen to paper after so many years but I will keep trying (and possibly failing) in the hope that one of these times will stick.

For now, it's focus time for the HU 2025 presentation which I hope to share on here as a video after next weekend.

Ak-Baital Pass, the highest pass in the ex-Soviet Union.

I crossed over this pass, in Tajikistan, 4 times whilst looping through Central Asia.

Unpaved on either side, it's either dealing with long stretches of corrugation/washboard that rattle your bike and bones loose or dodging deep potholes.

It's quite surreal to be out here and up here, far away from the rest of the world, save for maybe another traveller passing by on a bicycle or motorbike.
