SIBUYAN PUSHES BACK! 🌿✊

The Sangguniang Bayan of San Fernando, Romblon, has formally recalled and withdrawn its earlier endorsement of the proposed nickel-mining operations of Altai Philippines Mining Corporation in Barangay España, Sibuyan Island.

The decision was approved by a 4–2 vote during a special session on August 3, following weeks of peaceful protests, prayer brigades, and noise barrages led by residents and environmental advocates opposing the project. Mayor Fernando Marin certified the matter as urgent, citing procedural issues and growing concerns involving peace, order, and public safety.

Under the new resolution, broader public consultations, committee proceedings, natural-capital accounting, ecosystem valuation, a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis, and further environmental, social, scientific, and economic studies must be conducted before the council considers another action on the project.

Environmental coalition Alyansa Tigil Mina welcomed the withdrawal as a victory for the people protecting Sibuyan’s communities and natural environment.

The withdrawal marks a major setback for the proposed operations, but it does not cancel Altai’s underlying mining agreement. Sibuyan residents and environmental groups continue to call on the national government for its complete cancellation.

When severe flooding cut off Zhenlong Township in Hengzhou City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, three young women shouldered more than 100 kilograms of emergency supplies and trekked for six hours to reach stranded residents.
