Walking through Mariacka Street in Gdańsk. 🇵🇱
Don't just look at the amber shops. Look beyond them!

This street was practically obliterated during WWII. When it was rebuilt, they didn't just start from scratch. They reused surviving stonework and even brought in pieces from other destroyed buildings.

So somewhere amongst all those beautiful façades are little pieces of the past.

Gdańsk has some seriously impressive architecture. Centuries of history, beautiful façades, magnificent churches… and surprises around almost every corner.

But sometimes it's the little things that catch your attention. 👀

Take the drainpipes, for example!

A city with so much character that even its drainpipes have personality! 🐸🐘

These decorative waterspouts are called rzygacze and are a distinctive feature of Gdańsk's architecture. Originally designed to carry rainwater away from buildings, many historic examples are now mainly decorative, while modern versions keep the tradition alive.

Who knew plumbing could be so entertaining?

Gdańsk, you've officially made drainpipes interesting. Never thought I'd say that! 😂

Don’t get me wrong, I love planning a trip. But I sometimes wonder if we’re so busy ticking things off that we forget to actually experience the place.

What if we stopped asking WHAT to see and started asking HOW to see it?

Now that’s a different way to travel. 😉

Who said you have to travel far to have an adventure? 🌍

We’re always looking at where to go next. Another city, another country, another little corner of the world to discover. But sometimes we forget what’s practically on our doorstep!

Looking for somewhere to train for our Mount Sinai hike in January, we headed to Ben A’an in the Scottish Trossachs last weekend. Not exactly the other side of the world from home! 😂

A beautiful walk, challenging at times, but perfect training! And those views over Loch Katrine? The best reward! ⛰️

And it got me thinking… How often do we spend hours researching places thousands of miles away, while barely knowing what’s an hour from home?

Adventure doesn’t always need a passport. Sometimes it just needs a pair of walking shoes and a little curiosity. 🥾

We went to Göteborg with a few ideas, a little help from AI and absolutely no intention of ticking every tourist attraction off a list.

£82.70 for TWO return flights from Edinburgh to Göteborg! 🇸🇪✈️
Did we know much about Göteborg? Not really.
Was it somewhere we'd ever thought of visiting? Nope.
But £82.70 for both of us, return? Well, it would have been rude not to book! 🤣
And just like that, our 33rd wedding anniversary destination was sorted. ❤️
Would you have booked it too? 😂

It was just Grandma’s house. ❤️

The house where we played.
Where we had family meals.
Where nothing felt unusual, because it was simply part of our childhood.

And then one day you realise…

The house you grew up visiting has become part of the history of your hometown.

Last weekend, La Villa Ayrault opened its doors for the Journées du Patrimoine.

Around 1,000 people came to see it.

And 60 years after it was built, it now even has its own book.

Written by my sister. ❤️

Funny how somewhere that felt so ordinary to you as a child can become somewhere others come to discover.

Coming home makes you see things differently. 🇫🇷

I grew up in Parthenay. Its medieval streets and timber-framed houses were simply… home.

Coming back for the Journées du Patrimoine, I saw it differently.

The town has changed. The centre is much quieter than the one I remember, but its history is still everywhere.

Beautiful, imperfect and perhaps a little forgotten.

But it will always be home. ❤️
