"We are three secondary school friends now in our 80's. Myself (Shamim), Nalini, and Nalini. We love to get together for a holiday every three years to share lots of fun and laughs. For this trip, we decided to tick Japan off our bucket list, and we could not have picked a more magical destination.

First and foremost, we have to mention the Japanese people and their wonderfully welcoming culture. They are very polite, friendly, and despite their busy lives always ready and happy to help.

Japan felt like an absolute dream come true, moving effortlessly from the dazzling neon lights of Tokyo to the peaceful, serene, and breathtaking beautiful temples and shrines of Kyoto.

Our visit to a local sushi restaurant and an incredible food tour with our guides were both hugely enjoyable, interesting, and jolly experiences.

One of our most unique and peaceful moments was staying at a traditional Japanese ryokan. Swapping our shoes for slippers at the door, soaking in the deep comfort of an open-air onsen bath, and lounging in lovely yukata robes felt wonderfully relaxing.

Walking among the towering bamboo trees of Arashiyama gave us the magical feeling of being completely detached from the hustle and bustle of the modern world.

We loved visiting the Open Air Museum, taking a memorable day trip to Mount Fuji, and experiencing a traditional, sacred tea ceremony.

We also recommend TeamLab Planets in Tokyo. Walking barefoot through mid-calf-deep water with digital koi fish swimming around us, the crystal universe, and thousands of living orchids was truly out of the ordinary!

Trying to navigate our journeys by metro, local trains, and bullet trains with all those color-coded lines and finding the right station exit was admittedly a bit daunting at first! However, it turned out to be so much fun, and we felt a huge sense of achievement when we pulled it off without making a single mistake.

We are so glad we encouraged and supported one another to make this holiday happen. It turned out to be an unforgettable experience, made all the smoother with the help and guidance of Rickshaw Travel." Shamim

It would be an understatement to say we absolutely loved seeing these photos from Shamim. Thank you so so much for sharing with us! ❤️

Peru travel tips, straight from someone who's been there (and come back covered in insect bites). 🇵🇪

Our very own Travel Specialist, Ceri, has just returned from another trip to Peru. And whenever she talks to people about the country, the same questions crop up. So here's what she'd tell a friend planning a trip.

⛰️ Take altitude seriously. Where you start your trip matters! If you can, acclimatise gradually by starting somewhere at a lower altitude. Give your body time to adjust rather than launching straight into the high Andes and hoping for the best.

🍵 Get to know coca tea. It's widely available in the Andes and a traditional way of helping with altitude discomfort.

🦟 Pack insect repellent. Ceri learnt this one the hard way on the Inca Jungle Trek. Let's just say she came home with plenty of souvenirs she hadn't planned on.

🧥 Pack for all seasons. Peru's landscapes and altitudes vary enormously, so you might need layers for chilly mountain mornings, sun protection for the day and clothes suitable for warmer, more humid areas. Your suitcase may look like you're packing for three different holidays.

🎟️ Book key experiences early. Permits for popular routes and attractions can be limited, so don't leave everything until the last minute and risk missing out.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Travelling with children? Absolutely possible! Ceri thinks Peru is particularly well suited to tweens and teens, but the biggest tip is not to cram too much in. Journey times can be long, plans don't always run perfectly to schedule, and nobody enjoys a family holiday where everyone needs another holiday afterwards.

The golden rule? Leave room to slow down, explore and enjoy the unexpected. Peru is a big country, and you don't need to see it all in one go.

What would you want to know before travelling to Peru? You can find Ceri's full up to date travel tips on our website: https://www.rickshawtravel.co.uk/peru/blog/peru-travel-tips-altitude-fitness-families-and-what-to-pack/

Faithful to the destinations you love, or ready to be a traitor? 😈

Some destinations are exactly who they claim to be: faithful, reliable, never letting you down. Others have been playing a longer game, hiding depths you didn’t expect and winning you over when your guard was down.

Swipe to meet the ones hiding behind the classics, then tell us which side you’re on.

P.S. Yes we’ve watched too much of The Traitors, and no we’re not sorry about it.

For anyone who looked at the train to Machu Picchu and thought: but what if it was harder?

Ceri, our Peru Travel Specialist, recently took the MOST adventurous route to Machu Picchu that took her from…

🚴 Mountain biking through snowy mountains at an altitude of 4300 metres
🐒 Hiking through hot tropical jungle, past coffee and cocoa plantations, and native plants and birds
🏠 Visiting local villages and and staying with local families
♨️ Relaxing in the natural hot springs of Cocalmayo after a two-hour walk from a beautiful canyon
⛰️ Following the railway tracks, deep into the mountains, with the peaks of Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu rising above her

All led by a local guide and finishing with an early morning at Machu Picchu itself. Truly spectacular.

Here’s what you need to know:

👉 Duration: 4 days
👉 Starting point: Cusco
👉 Fitness level: A decent level of fitness is required as you also have to carry enough for the few days on your back and it gets humid with lots of uphill walking.
👉 Suitable for families? Children over 10 should be fine, as long as they are used to hill walking. Rafting and ziplining are also optional extras!

Peru might be best known for Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain, but there’s so much more to discover. Lake Titicaca offers a glimpse into the country’s cultural diversity, with Indigenous communities whose cultures, traditions and ways of life are distinct from one another.

🌾 The Uros people are known for their floating islands, built from totora reeds harvested from the lake. The reeds have plenty of other uses too, from making boats to building homes.

🧶 On Taquile Island, textile-making is an important part of community life, with skills passed down through generations.

🌊 Around the lake, Aymara and Quechua communities have their own languages, traditions and ways of life, shaped by this landscape.

For many families, welcoming visitors is also a source of income, alongside the fishing, farming and crafts that have long been part of life around the lake. Yes, tourism is part of the picture, but these are living communities, where people continue to work, raise families and maintain traditions - whether or not visitors are there to see it.

We're exploring more of Peru this week, and Lake Titicaca is a reminder of just how much there is to discover beyond the country's best-known sights.

Is the Titicaca Train worth adding to your Peru itinerary? 🚂🇵🇪

10.5 hours on a train sounds like a long time to sit still. But the Titicaca Train has a few tricks up its sleeve!

You're travelling between Cusco and Puno, crossing the spectacular Andean highlands along the way. There's gourmet dining, live music, a cocktail-making class and even a fashion show. (Our tip - don't take it seriously and embrace the fun 😉!).

The catch? It's a full day of travel, and it's not the cheapest way to get between the two. So we'd save it for when the journey itself is part of the adventure, rather than simply a way to get from A to B.

Ceri takes Peru 🇵🇪! And believe it or not, her top highlight wasn’t Machu Picchu - which just goes to show how much this incredible country has to offer.

Our Peru travel specialist, Ceri, just got back from a jaw-dropping week testing our experiences and finding out all the latest tips and advice to share with our customers (not a bad job hey). Here were her top experiences in her own words.

🌈 “My number one experience. I’d seen Rainbow Mountain in photos and part of me wondered whether it was all just heavily edited. Then I got there and thought: wow. It really is that colourful. And it’s not just the mountain: the scenery on the drive and the glaciers around Red Valley make the whole day.”

🚂 “The Titicaca Train - wildly considered among the best train journeys in the world and it’s not hard to see why. The views are unreal, with lakes, mountains, flamingos, llamas and alpacas rolling past. There's an open-air carriage at the back, a three-course lunch with w**e, afternoon tea, live entertainment, and a stretch right through the middle of a town where everyone comes out to wave.”

🌴 ”The Inca Jungle Trek - a 55km downhill cycle, starting among snowy landscapes and glaciers, then winding down hairpin bends and dropping thousands of metres in altitude. In just a couple of hours, you go from high mountains to the jungle, with cicadas buzzing and pineapples growing at the roadside. On my trip there were just a few of us and our private guide, and we saw hardly anyone else for days. Unbelievable.”

Which one of these would you choose? You can read all about Ceri's trip highlights on our blog: https://www.rickshawtravel.co.uk/peru/blog/peru-travel-tips-2026-highlights-beyond-machu-picchu/
