📗 The Tlingit Indians by Aurel Krause
This book is fascinating! Written records of the Tlingit were not documented, and traditions, behaviors, and histories known today are mostly derived from oral tradition. From Goodreads, “Aurel Krause and his brother spent six months among the Tlingit. This classic study is the earliest and most comprehensive account of an important Northwest Coast culture before it was significantly changed by European contact.”
📘 Fry Bread by Kevin Noble Maillard and Illustrated by Juana Martinez-Neal
From beginning to end, this is a beautiful story brought to life by the wonderful illustrations. From making fry bread from scratch, to its incorporation into everyday life. “Fry bread is everything,” and “Fry bread is us. We are still here, elder and young, friend and neighbor. We strengthen each other to learn, change, and survive.”
The concept of fry bread, in general, has a dark history explaining why it became a staple for many in the 1860s. There are those who view the recipe as one that caused dependency issues and affected their ancestors dearly, while others see fry bread as a powerful symbol of endurance, unity, and survival.
The first time I had fry bread was in Whistler made during a special event hosted by the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre. Meeting local residents, learning about their culture, and being invited into their space has profoundly opened my way of thinking, and I’ve always been so grateful. It’s one of my most cherished memories in Canada.
📙 Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer
There is reason this book is high on most recommendation lists. I’m intentionally reading this book slowly to absorb the depth of the author’s words and meanings.
