Taken from the Clifton Suspension Bridge with an eye very much on mood and contrast, this one was all about the spaceship clouds rushing over the city. In the gloom, down there, is The Cumberland Basin; a very large lock that serves as gateway into Bristol’s Harbour. The Portway road runs almost all the way from the Mouth of the Avon into the city. Bristol has the second worst traffic problem in the UK, and at some point over the next two years the road bridge that spans both the basin and the river will need to be replaced. I can’t say any of us are looking forward to that.

Now boarded up, Canon’s House, Lloyds Bank’s former South West HQ on Canon’s Marsh was constructed from 1988 and finished in 1991. According to Historic England, ‘Canon’s House is an accomplished example of Post-Modernist architecture, a style widespread between about 1975 and 1990. Post-Modern buildings are characterised by their engagement with context and setting, reference to older architectural traditions, and use of symbolism’.
It certainly strikes a distinctive pose with its hodgepodge of pillars and turrets and curves and glass. It now enjoys a Grade 2 listed status, so like it or not, it is here to stay…
