“Trophy hunting” is a term critics love to use and almost never define. It’s become shorthand for the animals people are most emotional about like lions, wolves, giraffes, and polar bears. It’s as if hunters are flying across the world just to shoot a head for the wall and walk away. That’s the image. That’s the accusation. But stop and ask the obvious question. What do you mean by trophy hunting? Because in the real world of legal hunting, animals aren’t shot and wasted. Meat, hides, fat, usable parts are used, shared, and valued. The story people tell themselves and what actually happens are often two very different things.

Here’s the disconnect. Most Americans understand why someone hunts a deer, food makes sense to them. But when the species changes, the assumption changes. Suddenly it’s framed as vanity instead of conservation, waste instead of use, destruction instead of management. Yet regulated hunts for high-profile species operate under the same core principles. utilization, quotas, law, funding, sustainability. Hunters aren’t embarrassed by calling an animal a trophy, we respect what we take. What needs correcting is the myth that “trophy hunting” means careless killing. It doesn’t. And the more we challenge that false definition, the harder it becomes to weaponize the term against hunting itself.
