It is national Heritage Day tomorrow! The 24th of September is a day when culture is in the spotlight, and South Africans are encouraged to celebrate the diversity of their beliefs and traditions.

Woza Moya & Friends at the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust, a long standing member of the 1000 Hills Community Tourism Organisation, has a huge array of proudly South African heritage themed garments, décor items, jewellery and art works.

The Botho International Heritage Festival returns for its 12th edition from 23–27 September 2026, transforming Wushwini Pan African Centre alongside Inanda Dam in the Valley of 1000 Hills, into a vibrant gathering place for African creativity, heritage, memory, dialogue and collective celebration.

Under the powerful theme “Botho: I Am Because We Are,” the five-day festival invites audiences, artists, cultural practitioners, elders, young people, communities and visitors to reconnect with the values that bind African societies together.

“More than an arts festival, Botho 2026 is conceived as a living archive—a space where memory is preserved, stories are reclaimed, indigenous knowledge is celebrated, and contemporary African expression is given room to evolve. The 12th Edition is curated as a ritual of reconnection—to ancestry, land, story and collective purpose,” says convenor Jerry Pooe.

Entry to productions / events / shows is R50 at the door.

" LAUGHTER, cheering and some fierce competition filled the Hillcrest High School sports field as 575 gogos from communities across eThekwini took part in the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust’s (HACT) 11th Gogolympics recently."

The 2026 Gogolympics saw teams representing 15 communities compete in a colourful programme of traditional and recreational games.

Love them, plant them, care for them, protect them, nurture them… 🌱

Today marks the final day of South African National Arbor Week, held annually from 1 to 7 September. As spring begins to unfold, Arbor Week encourages us to plant and care for indigenous trees and to promote environmental awareness.

Trees do so much for us. They absorb carbon dioxide and release the oxygen we need to breathe. They provide shade that cools towns and cities, reduce the effects of urban heat, help prevent soil erosion and provide homes for animals and insects.

This year’s Tree of the Year is the Wild Olive (Olea europaea subsp. africana).

Here in the Valley of 1000 Hills, ancient trees are part of the landscape’s incredible character, beauty and calm — adding immeasurable value to the region. 🌿

So, on this final day of Arbor Week, take a moment to appreciate the trees around you… and perhaps even plant one for the future. 💚🌳
