Returning to the boat after enjoying the view from the top of the Colchester sand dunes near the Sundays River Mouth. Now it's time for a cold drink and putting your feet up while we cruise back to the Addo Cruises dock.

Following on from the video we posted on Wednesday showing the impact of the recent floodwaters upstream, here is a video showing how the floodwaters caused the whole side of one of the big dunes before Skelmhoek towards the river mouth to collapse.

We took a cruise 15km upstream from our mooring and turned around about 3 km short of the Barclay Bridge. We had a group of avid birders and had many wonderful bird sightings, including a juvenile fish eagle catching a huge fish. This isn't one of our regular cruises, but can be organised on special request.

Maggie did a video during the cruise to show the impact the recent flood waters had on the river and river banks.

The Black-headed Heron is the long-legged detective of the African grasslands, calm, patient, and always looking like it has somewhere important to be. With its striking black head, sharp yellow eyes, and elegant grey feathers, this bird stands out whether it’s stalking through open fields or perched proudly on a fence post.

Unlike many herons that prefer water, the Black-headed Heron is just as happy hunting in dry grasslands, roadside fields, and even farmlands. Its menu is wonderfully varied and includes insects, frogs, mice, snakes, and even the occasional unlucky bird chick can all end up on the dinner list.

When it takes to the skies, its broad wings and slow, powerful wingbeats make it look almost prehistoric. But don’t let the graceful appearance fool you, this heron is a skilled hunter with lightning-fast reflexes.

Meet the long-distance champion of the shoreline β€” the Common Whimbrel!

With its long curved bill and unmistakable β€œwhim-brel, whim-brel” call, this quirky coastal bird is a true globe-trotter. The Common Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus) migrates thousands of kilometres between its breeding grounds in the far north and the sunny shores of South Africa!

Often spotted probing the mud for crabs, worms and tasty treats along sandy shores and estuaries, these elegant birds are nature’s very own beachcombers. Keep an eye out for their striped heads and graceful stride next time you’re near an estuary or river mouth. They can normally be seen from around September to April, with some individuals overwintering.

Small bird… BIG passport stamps!

The Sundays River Ferry is capable (and licensed) to seat up to 30 passengers. Seating is available both downstairs and on the viewing deck upstairs.

The downstairs seating is undercover and away from the hot summer sun, while we can close the stacker doors at the front of the boat if the wind gets too much.

Upstairs, we can take a maximum of 10 guests at a time and it is perfect to enjoy the beautiful views you get on the cruise.

The twin bridges crossing the beautiful Sundays River, which we see on our cruises, each tell a different chapter in the story of travel through the Eastern Cape.

The historic McKay Bridge is one of the region’s most iconic historic landmarks. Originally opened in 1895, the steel bridge was built to replace the old ferry crossings that once carried travellers between Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown. Constructed from steel and iron imported from Sheffield in England, the bridge was named after John Mackay, whose efforts helped make the project a reality. After the original structure was damaged in floods, the current bridge was officially reopened in 1938. Today, although no longer used for vehicle traffic, the Mackay Bridge remains a beloved historical attraction and a favourite spot for fishing, walking, cycling and sunset photography over the Sundays River.

Towering nearby is the modern N2 bridge across the Sundays River, carrying thousands of travellers every year. Built to accommodate growing traffic demands on the national highway, the bridge forms a vital transport link between Port Elizabeth and the eastern and northern parts of the country. The elevated structure offers sweeping views over the wide river, surrounding dunes and lush riverbanks that make the Sundays River mouth area so distinctive.

Together, the historic Mackay Bridge and the modern N2 bridge create a striking contrast between old-world engineering and contemporary infrastructure, standing side by side as gateways to the Sundays River Valley and the nearby Addo Elephant National Park.
