If you explore the Colchester dunes next to the Sundays River, you will find that some of the hollow areas have water in them. Not just any water, but fresh water. The Colchester sand dunes act as a massive natural sponge. When it rains, the sand absorbs the moisture, which then filters and seeps down to the lowest points, emerging as freshwater springs and lush reed beds. These inter-dune hollows, or dune slacks, are especially visible after all the rains we had over the last couple of months.

If you hear a sharp rattling call and spot a black-and-white bird seemingly suspended in mid-air, you’ve just met one of nature’s most skilled anglers – the Pied Kingfisher!

Unlike most kingfishers that dive from a perch, the Pied Kingfisher can hover like a helicopter, beating its wings furiously while keeping its eyes locked on the water below. Once it spots a fish… WHOOSH! It plunges headfirst into the water and often emerges with its lunch in its beak.

Even more impressive? Its eyes are protected by a special transparent membrane that acts like built-in swimming goggles, allowing it to see clearly underwater.

You can often spot these fascinating birds around rivers, dams, estuaries, and calm stretches of water. So next time you’re cruising with us, keep an eye on the sky, you might witness one of the most spectacular fishing displays in the bird world.

The Sundays River Ferry comfortably seats a total of 30 people in total. The upstairs deck can take 10, and guests usually rotate themselves, giving everybody a chance to enjoy the view from the top.

Not just is it a case of the boat can seat 30 people, but it is licensed to legally carry 30 guests and has fully comprehensive liability insurance covering guests in case of something unforeseen happening.

Bright, beautiful and incredibly agile, the White-fronted Bee-eater is one of those birds that’s impossible to ignore. With its vivid green plumage, striking white forehead and long tail streamers, it looks like it’s dressed for a tropical party!

As its name suggests, this feathered hunter has a taste for bees, wasps and other flying insects. But don’t worry – before swallowing a bee, it cleverly removes the sting by repeatedly bashing the insect against a branch. Talk about knowing how to handle a prickly situation!

White-fronted Bee-eaters are also highly social birds. They often nest in colonies, digging tunnels into sandy riverbanks where they raise their chicks together. It’s a bustling neighbourhood with plenty of chatter and teamwork.

Keep an eye out along riverbank while cruising with us, especially during the warmer months. If you spot one perched on a branch, watch closely – it may launch into an aerial display worthy of an Olympic gymnast before returning to exactly the same perch.
