Driving through Namibia is one of the best ways to experience the country but it’s not quite like a road trip through Europe. 🚙

Here are 6 common mistakes to avoid on your first Namibia self-drive:
1️⃣ Relying too much on Google Maps driving times
A route that looks like a few hours on the map can easily take most of the day once you factor in gravel roads, stops and the road conditions.
2️⃣ Treating gravel roads like asphalt
Namibia’s gravel roads can be well maintained, but they still require a slower, steadier approach. A suitable high-clearance vehicle makes a big difference too.
3️⃣ Moving to a new place every single day
Namibia is huge. Trying to squeeze too much into one trip can leave you spending more time behind the wheel than actually enjoying where you are. Where possible, give yourself two nights in a location.
4️⃣ Letting the fuel tank get too low
Fuel stations can be few and far between once you’re out in the more remote areas. If you have the opportunity to fill up, take it.
5️⃣ Trying to fit everything in
You don’t need to see every single highlight in one trip. Leave some breathing room in your itinerary, the long drives, unexpected stops and completely empty stretches of road are part of what makes Namibia special.
6️⃣ Expecting wildlife to stick to your schedule
There are no guarantees when it comes to wildlife. Give yourself time, keep your eyes open and enjoy the moments that happen when you least expect them. 🦒
